Urban Vault Interviews - K.Burns

Urban Vault caught up with U.S emcee K.Burns to ask him some questions about his music, collaborations & fashion...

K.Burns is a Rapper/CEO in his early 20's and resides in the Clinton Hills section of Brooklyn (the same hood as the Notorious B.I.G). Some view him as the Boss of the Team Fame movement. Since 2006 he has been releasing a series of mixtapes on the streets of New York City.

What is your name?

My name is K.Burns, some call me K, some call me Burns; it's all good to me though you know.

How old are you?

I'm 24, a scorpio baby! All my scorpios worldwide stand up!

Where are you from?

Born & raised in Brooklyn, NY. My father is from the infamous Marcy Projects & my mother is from Clinton Hill (a small neighborhood that birthed the Notorious BIG), I actually grew up just 2 blocks from Biggie.

How long have you been making music?

I been writing music since I was 12 years old. It started as release therapy for me after my baby brother got killed in '98. Making music keeps me sane & well grounded.

How many songs /albums have you released to date?

Whoa, about 6 mixtapes, 1 free digital album & over 150 songs on various mixtapes...My solo online & street releases have been:
•Brooklyn Gangster [mixtape]-2008
•Still On The Corner [mixtape]-2008
•Just The Freestyles [mixtape]-2009
•Lifestyle Of A Mafioso [mixtape]-2009
•The Transition [Digital FreEP]-2010
•The Heat Wave [mixtape]-2010
•Best Of K.Burns|Spring Training [mixtape]-2011
All together I've been releasing mixtapes/albums all out of my pocket since 2008. Be sure to check my latest release "Best Of K.Burns|Spring Training Edition" via www.DatPiff.com NOW.

Can you tell us about your new song/album, the background and inspirations behind it?

My next major mixtape release "Brooklyn State of Mind" is scheduled for Summer 2011. This new release is a preview of what is to come from my brand Team Fame which I plan to establish a lot more with this project. This particular release is an Ode to my Borough that I rep with pride and I guess you can say since everything didn't go as planned with my signing last year with a label I rather not speak on; got me on my shit harder. Let's just say they fueled the fire for "Brooklyn State of Mind" in a way. You know frustration can be a great thing if you can turn it into determination. And at the end of the day, I just really feel like the world has forgot about Brooklyn Hip Hop as a whole, we got big shoes to fill & I'm aware of it...I just want to show & prove, and get my story out to the world. So make sure everyone online look out for "Brooklyn State of Mind" available everywhere online this summer! I plan to fuck the game up!

How have you ended up in the music industry?

My first industry experience came back in 2005-2006 when I was featured on my production duo's "L&X Music" release "Unsigned Hype Vol. 1 Mixtape". Then I dropped my first official mixtape release with DJ On Point entitled "Brooklyn Gangster" in 2007 & I was featured on a BET Rap City 'Cipha' back in 2007, a few doors opened up. I was fortunate enough to cinch a songwriters deal in 2010, but it wasn't really my thing. I don't mind ghostwriting, I just feel I can make more of an impact as an artist rather then behind the scene making another act hot. I'm still a pen for hire, but I do that independently now, you need a hit, get at me.

What do you think of the music industry in 2011?

I feel the music "industry" in particular may be on the brink of extinction. But the music business as a whole is going to flourish. With all the internet has to offer, artist are now the label, ceo, promoters, and even producers & engineers. I feel if more artist were to adopt this policy and do as much as you can on your own will, in the end the results will always be in your favor. Given the artist has a strong team behind him. Just take a look at the trend of the artist that major labels are stepping to, they tend to be artist who in fact doesn't need the major behind him. This is a DIY era we live in today; and its scaring these majors up. I kind of love it.

Who inspires you when you make your music?

Of course my life experiences, my brothers & my daughter and my environment. My Team Fame family inspires me day in & day out also, but I really can say over the years, I have become one with my fan base and they inspire me a lot more then they probably think. I love them for it.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your Career?

Every artist in the Team Fame camp, L&X Music, DJ On Point, DJ MLG, Young Nik, Face Hammaz, Popula, Peaz, Naptron, Mrs.Kelo, many many dj's from all over NYC, so many musicians, I would be here forever if I named them all. I have been blessed to collaborate with a lot of amazing artist, dj's & producers. If I forgot anyone, please forgive me. Look out for my little brother Brooklyn Bizzy & my yungin Jay Payso, they up next.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

I'd love to work with Nas a lot, as well as Beanie Sigel, he's like one of my favorites. Of course Jadakiss would be great to work with as well. The G.O.O.D Music camp too; I been bumping Common since 2nd grade. Outkast especially, I'd love to see what us 3 would come up with. Cee-Lo Green too...A lot of R&B singers like Chris Brown, Keri Hilson & Ciara. Its a lot of UK artist I'd like to work with also, like Giggs; that guy is raw and the homie Biggz too, its kind of just bridging the gap between our two markets you know. Oh yeah, Delvin is good too.

What was the first album u brought?

I remember buying Nas "It Was Written" from this guy the day it dropped on cassette, my mother had gave me money to get a pizza, as any wise person would do...I brought the Nas album & settled for food for thought, rather then food for the gut hahahahahahaha. Guess I had the passion before I even knew it.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

This one is pretty tough, right now... this current moment, I'd have to say its "In The Morning" by J.Cole & Drake, my production team L&X Music destroys the production on that, so I'm supporting that track 110%. Its surreal when I hear it on the radio & know L&X Music finally broke through with that joint. Real dream come true type shit for the familia.

If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your draw?

Thats a tough one also, it gotta be a tie between Notorious BIG "Life After Death" & Jay-Z "Vol.2" albums when I think about it. Gotta keep the Brooklyn Classics with me! But then I must keep Fugees "The Score"...nobody touches that in my crib.

What do you think of TV music talent show competitions?

I enjoy them, I find em amusing. I usually watch them with my daughter and it's always good to see all the talent that's out there. I really gotta kick out that Oriental guy that was on American Idol singing "She bang, She bang, She Bang"; that shit right there used to have my stomach in knots from laughing so much.

What do you do when you’re not making music?

Regular shit, family time a lot, a lot of Sports Center since I'm an avid sports fanatic, or usually doing some graphics, catching up on some graphic designing. I spend as much time with my 2 year old daughter every time I'm outside of work. But I'm just a regular dude...sunday dinners are still my favorite.

What’s your favourite Fashion brand?

I'd have to go with Polo by Ralph Lauren hands down. Rich Yung has been catching my eye a lot too, its kinda my steez.

Do you have any tattoos or piercings?

Yeah man, I remember getting my first ear piercing for my 3rd birthday. By 4th grade I had both ears pierced. And I only got 1 tattoo, until I find a Tattoo Artist that draw better then me... them things are forever, I gotta make sure they smooth hahahahahahahahaha.

How many pairs of trainers do you own?

Too many sneakers to count, I think its like 4 pair of Air Jordans I actually don't own. Nothing like a fresh pair of J.O's as we call them in Brooklyn.

How many hats do you own?

I'm not big on hats, I got about 3 believe it or not, 1 Yankee fitted, 1 Mets fitted & 1 Brooklyn fitted designed by this ill clothing company called Paulies, if you see a dude in a Brooklyn fitted & it has a New Era logo on it...uh...that's not official. No disrespect to New Era, they the shit, but the Brooklyn fitted belongs to Paulies...shout outs to Vinnies Styles.

What’s your favourite takeaway?

-I'd have to say I can't pick...honestly.
Anywhere I can get a piece of mind & forget about the bullshit for a little.

How many followers do you have on Twitter?

A bit over 1,080 if I'm not mistaking, follow me if your reading this interview @theRealKBurns.
