ThisisDA – Hotsteppa (Music Video) + Based Off Black EP Release Date (03rd Sept)

ThisisDA – Based Off Black EP (Premiered via Complex Magazine/Out Now)

The moment is finally here for fast-rising 20-year old British rapper and producer ThisisDA as he unveils his debut EP Based Off Black and long awaited follow up to his 2014 album Super Arkane. The new record, premiered via Complex, comes highly anticipated, after the last few months have seen the Bristol native garner strong support and rave reviews from the likes of likes of Complex, The 405, Hypetrak, OnSMASH, DJ Booth, Earmilk, BBC 6 Music and Clash Magazine among others.

Led by previously released singles – the politically charged ‘Sell Me’, aggressive and braggadocios ‘Hotsteppa’ and ‘Won’t Change’ featuring West Coast rap veteran Blu, with superb production on the EP coming from Spacedtime (Mick Jenkins, Tone Oliver), Julian G, Herring Franky and frequent collaborator Mankub, ThisisDA’s Based Off Black is without question, one of the best UK Hip Hop projects of the year, but don’t just take our word for it.

From the attention grabbing Death Grips inspired opening track ‘Foreword’, to the anti-establishment anthem ‘Shame’ which follows in the same vein to ‘Sell Me’, to the autobiographical ‘No More Mind’ which sees ThisisDA open up about his struggles with music, women, pain and drugs over the last 18 months, the Based Off Black EP does more than set ThisisDA apart from his UK Hip Hop peers, it capture the essence and offers a true and relatable insight into young adulthood in 2015.

Speaking about the inspiration for the EP, ThisisDA confesses,

“you could say this record is about my darkest days”, before adding, “and the term ‘black’ is an umbrella one really, concerning depression, my visual aesthetic, race, even the book of Genesis – everything comes from the black. My whole life is based off black”.

Recommended if you like authenticity, vulnerability and lyrical dexterity in your music, ThisisDA is flying the flag for unadulterated Hip Hop in the UK.
