A forgotten ancient world of bloodstained samurai swords and majestic sunsets over desert landscapes, ASM’s third album, ‘The Jade Amulet’, is their Magnus Opus. Imagine a Quentin Tarantino movie set in ancient Greece and scored by Ennio Morricone and A Tribe Called Quest.
ASM is principally composed of MC’s Green and FP and DJ/Producer Fade. this international trio of friends from high school (one Canadian, one German, one English) first gained international recognition from their collaborative singles with Wax Tailor: ‘Positively Inclined’ & ‘Say Yes’ on the albums ‘Hope & Sorrow’ and ‘In the Mood for Life’ (combined sales of over 100,000).
ASM’s first album ‘Platypus Funk’ first saw the light of day in March 2010 on French independent label Lab’Oratoire. The Platypus Funk campaign was something of a Launchpad for the group, with ASM teaming up with Wax Tailor as featured act & support band for his ‘Hope & Sorrow’ tour. The tour took them through high-profile venue spots such as the mythical l’Olympia in Paris or the Arenes de Nimes, as well as a long line of summer festivals including Solidays, Francofolies, Garorock, and Vielles Charrues. The campaign also saw ASM first break onto the media circuit with spots on France Inter, Taratata, Radio Nova, and many others.
The second album ‘Crown Yard’ soon followed in the autumn of 2011, now with a cinematic 70s b-movie edge and increasingly sophisticated orchestration that explored the roots of intelligent Hip Hop in the form of dusty funk, soul, and afrobeat-inspired soundscapes. ASM’s first major tour as a headline act took them to 10 countries in 15 months. Amongst others, the Crown Yard Tour took them to Glastonbury (UK), Marsatac (FR), Paleo (CH), Dour (BE), and Soundwave (CR) festivals, as well as over 70 venues across Europe.
In 2013 – 2014, FP and Green could be found alongside Wax Tailor on his ‘Dusty Rainbow Experience’ and ‘Phonovisions Orchestra’ tours, alongside Deluxe on their ‘Family Show’ tour, or teaming up with Chinese Man for their ’10 Years’ tour of Zeniths across France and more high-profile festival slots across the globe. Meanwhile, producer Fade, recognized as one of the leading MPC-maestros in the game, became one of the founders of ‘Jukebox Champions’, and embarked on a worldwide tour over 2 years, backed by Adidas All Originals and Akai.
Having started the year with a brief excursion into dubplate culture with a successful run of ASM Soundsystem shows, ASM are back in full capacity in 2015 to present ‘The Jade Amulet’ to the world. The sonic journey of The Jade Amulet is visually accompanied by a graphic novel / comic book version of the story, and the corresponding live show takes the form of a marriage of funked-out Hip Hop show and traditional theater piece. This is easily ASM’s most ambitious project to date, and certainly not one to miss.
