TOPE’ back! For the first official release of 2016 TOPE steps behind the boards as a producer for the new Cool Nutz remix, featuring the legendary Slum Village and Bosko.
Appearing on Cool Nutz upcoming album, ‘N.P.Y’ (Never Play Yaself) dropping 23/02, the beat for ‘Best & Worst’ originally appeared on TOPE’s 2013 release ‘TROUBLEMAN’ for the soundtrack to ‘What Up’. In an accidental exchange of instrumentals, TOPE gave Cool Nutz the beat at Kaleidoscope Music Festival in Eugene, Or, while both acts were opening for Nas. As fate would have it, a few years later the instrumental would resurface with Bosko and Slum Village appearing on it and catching the attention of Okayplayer.
Premiered this past Sunday, on Dilla Day, writer Karas Lamb break down TOPE’s involvement,
“The track produced by Portland-to-Oakland transplant and BROKEBOYSYNDROME architect TOPE, is the fruit of Cool Nut’s time spent out on the road with Slum Village in 2015. An ode to crew love punctuated by hard verses, ‘Best & Worst’ features longtime collaborator Bosko rounding things out with a killer soul vocal. The end result is a lush remix that flashes back to the heyday of the sped up sample and stands as a true testament to the sonic influence of Slum founder and celebrated beat god J Dilla”.
