Following his ‘I Wanna Love’ collaboration with veteran UK rapper Mr Bigz, which was released in the spring to rave reviews from MTV UK, SBTV, The 405, RWD Magazine and the MOBO Awards among others, South East London musician Johnson Orchid has been hiding away and working on his long-awaited debut EP ‘False Prophet’, which is due for release next month.
The first taste of Orchid’s forthcoming ‘False Prophet’ EP is his brand new single titled ‘Certy’, which comes with a GRM Daily-premiered accompanying visuals. Produced by Ayo Beatz (Wiley, Labrinth, Wretch 32) and written by Orchid, ‘Certy’ sees the London native putting on for ambitious and hard working people, over a gritty and captivating musical backdrop, with infectious Trap and Hip Hop sensibilities.
The visuals, which were directed by Ash Riley (Rough Copy, Loick Essien, Da Beatfreakz), captures the gritty vibe of Orchid’s South East London hometown, while also matching his aggressive and braggadocios stance on the record. The single shot sequence strips away any gimmicks or frills, and allows Orchid to connect directly to his audience, with a very commanding artistic performance.
Speaking about what made him create this record, Johnson Orchid says, “’Certy’ was inspired by the grind of my city London, and all the hard-working people I know – how we are all striving to achieve our dreams, and even when we hit stumbling blocks, we keep pushing through. ‘Certy’ is just a short way of saying certified, and everyone putting that work in, is ‘certy’ in my books”.
