UK Afrobeat Sensation StunnahGee joins forces with Nigeria’s King of R&B Kymo Kingin for new Breast Cancer Awareness EP
Fusing a pioneering blend of R&B, afrobeats, pop and trap, the pair have come up with a genre-crossing record, produced by T-Izze, with a powerful purpose too. Despite this, lead single ‘I Need An Answer’ takes the form of a laid-back R&B ballad, led by delicate piano and emotive vocals.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the ‘Nipples‘ EP, StunnahGee and Kymo commented that it was their intention to,
“Create world music and to break boundaries with the project, but in the long run after sharing so many ideas, the thought came to us that we can do much more than just create music, but also give back to the society and that’s how we made it a breast cancer awareness project”.
Since his Aunt has had over 5 breast cancer scares in the past and his Uncle passed away from pancreatic cancer, raising awareness for any kind of cancer is something close to StunnahGee’s heart. However, when asked about the EP’s provocative name and why it’s called ‘Nipples’, they humorously replied:
“Just so you can be curious enough to ask that question”.
Influenced by the likes of R. Kelly and Usher, StunnahGee takes lessons from some of the best, channelling this inspiration into creating a form of music that can provide ‘the soundtrack to people’s daily life’. Whilst Kymo looks up to artists including Chris Brown and Bryson Tiller, it is clear that the two are on the same page when it comes to creating music.
During his career, StunnahGee has performed with the likes of Wande Coal, Patoranking and Kiss Daniels, and has been a nominee for the MOBO awards and African Pride’s artist of the year 2016, winning a BEFFTA in 2016 too. Equally, Kymo was even nominated for the prestigious Channel O awards in Africa, performing in front of a huge crowd.
The evocative video for ‘I Need An Answer’, filmed innovatively using a drone, exhibits some stunning choreography performed on the shore of a beach, accompanied by thought provoking images of sufferers of breast cancer. 10% of the ‘Nipples‘ EP sales revenue will be donated to breast cancer patients unable to afford treatments and organizations trying to find a cure for the disease.
