Murkage Dave, the east London artist and DJ who is also part of Tonga and one half of the UK alt-R&B duo HALFBROTHER – has released his new solo single and visual, PUT ME ON YOUR SHOULDERS
Following on from his last single, the Skepta-produced ‘Every Country’ with Jaykae which the duo performed on MistaJam’s 1Xtra show and at Reading & Leeds festivals and received major support across both Radio 1 and 1Xtra, ‘Put Me On Your Shoulders’ sees Murkage Dave once again proving the consistency of his top quality, arresting sounds and is set to feature on his forthcoming debut album which is out next year. Produced by Hologram Lo, the track was written in Paris about his time in Manchester, with finishing touches added in Berlin, London and Amsterdam. The captivating visual was directed by Syrine Boulanour and filmed in Murkage Dave’s hometown of Leytonstone.
Speaking on ‘Put You On My Shoulders’, Murkage Dave said: “People listen to this song and ask me if I really woke up to a blade in my face. anyone who was about in Manchester back then will tell you that this was just a small part of the chaos that was occurring at that time.
It’s definitely a break-up song. but there are different kinds of relationships. you can break up with somebody you’re f*cking, but you can also break up with friends, places, or even a time in your life.
Syrine Boulanour directed the video, who I’m a huge huge fan of. He came to London with a couple man and just followed me around for a few days. Mike Skinner always makes fun of me saying all I do is walk around Hackney but it’s kinda true. Just going studio, going chicken shop and stuff. We went back to where I grew up in Leytonstone too which was kind of emotional, that field I’m standing in with the blocks in the back is part of Wanstead Flats, that’s where I used to ride my bike as a kid and get away from stuff”.
With a presence in major cities across Europe such as London, Copenhagen, and Berlin and at internationally renowned festivals including Glastonbury, Bestival and Latitude, Murkage Dave runs the popular party and sound system Tonga with Mike Skinner which has welcomed guests such as Kano, Giggs, Fekky and Kojo Funds. He is set to join The Streets on their upcoming UK tour in April 2018.
Murkage Dave featured on French rapper and producer Nekfeu’s latest album ‘Cyborg’ which went triple Platinum in France, with their single ‘O.D.’ going Gold. This year he formed HALFBROTHER with Patrick Scally after collaborating on the track ‘Car Bomb’, which became a cult hit last year and culminated in support from Pharrell Williams on his Beats 1 radio show. The duo have been steadily making their mark on the music scene and catching the attention of outlets such as PAPER, The Independent, i-D, DIY and Earmilk with tracks such as ‘Go Tell The Mandem’ and ‘Love Letter’ along the way. They recently brought their first performance as a duo to The Old Blue Last as the main opening act for Star Slinger whilst next year they will release their debut album ‘Men Can’t Protect You Anymore’ which will feature their unique take on alternative R&B influenced sounds and exciting collaborations with UK Hip Hop artist Oscar #worldpeace.
