West-London Hip Hop collective The Age of L.U.N.A today share their highly-anticipated debut album, THE AGE OF L.U.N.A.
A cohesive body of work, ‘The Age of L.U.N.A‘ features previous standout singles including Six Feet Deep, Sweetness, Body & Soul and Freddie, embedded between new, original material, this 16-track offering promises to be an exciting debut for the four-piece.
Bursting onto the scene, The Age of L.U.N.A have charted a steady rise in their short time in the spotlight, amassing over 2 million streams to date across a slew of addictive singles and free-flowing mixtapes. Comprised of rappers Butch Arkas and Kyote Noir, vocalist Daniella Wizard and Blue Lab Beats’ prolific producer NK-OK, the collective is united in their desire to ‘Live. Under. No. Authority’, with freedom of expression.
‘Intro’ opens the album with warped spoken word definitions of ‘L.U.N.A.’ relayed over a melancholic piano melody. Moving into the smooth ‘Body & Soul’, which features NK-OK’s grooving soundscapes that effortlessly carry Daniella’s soulful vocal hook. Rappers Butch and Kyote syncopate with provocative rhymes, demonstrating the lyrical maturity this collective are swiftly becoming known for.
In their most provocative tune yet, ‘Freddie’ sees a trumpet loop carry the tune forward as the rappers’ clever wordplay is interspersed with Daniella’s sultry vocals. Laid-back love song ‘Six Feet Deep’ leads into their glitchy, sun-drenched recent single ‘Feels So Good’. 90s rhythmic slow-jams ‘Blow Me Away’ and ‘Indigo’ blend soft seductive harmonies with J Dilla esque percussion.
The Age Of L.U.N.A.’s sharp songwriting sensibility is clearly recognized on the smooth and enticing track ‘Sweetness’, cleverly layered hooks and warm production angle this track a future classic. Next track ‘Boom’, sees rappers Butch and Kyote reform as their earlier alias Zangwu as their lyrical warnings against wanton violence are laid over a futuristic production. Smooth interlude ‘Candy Love’ leads into ‘Maybe Yeah’, a track that matches Butch and Kyote’s laid-back flows and Daniella’s velvety vocals with the gently uplifting production.
‘Pinnacle’ sees Daniella’s honey-soaked vocals dominate in a stand-out solo performance. ‘Fresh’ stuns with a twinkling synth-driven production and an addictive earworm chorus. Lowering the tempo is relaxed jam ‘Day One’, leading into jazz-infused ‘Hate’ which features brass instrumentation and free-flowing keys. Closing out the project is ‘Groove’, which has a laid-back rhythm befitting of the tracks moniker.
Setting media alight with their quest to forge musicality and consciousness back into mainstream rap; The Age of L.U.N.A. have received tastemaker support from the likes of The Guardian, Phil Taggart (BBC R1), NOTION, MistaJam (BBC R1 & 1Xtra), DAZED, Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), HUCK and Noisey. Since their formation, the group has performed across the globe and landmark festivals and events including Wireless, Obonjan, Glastonbury, Wilderness and Ibiza Rocks.
