British Soul songstress Cherri V unveils her long-awaited EP, BROWN EYED SOUL VOL. 1

After teasing us with exciting singles over the past six months, such as ‘Leave Me Be’, ‘Things You Do’ and ‘Swimming’ featuring UK rap star RoxXxan, which have garnered support and critical acclaim from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, Capital Xtra, The Beat London, Clash Music, The 405, Earmilk and 1883 Magazine, to mention a few, British singer and songwriter Cherri V is proud to reveal her long-awaited and highly anticipated EP ‘Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 1’.

The glorious 8-track EP, offering features eclectic and stellar production from Hannah V (Rihanna, Andreya Triana, JP Cooper), Da BeatFreakz (Wretch 32, Giggs, Shakka), and XVR BLCK (Ms Banks, Kojey Radical, Paigey Cakey), among others, as well as guest appearances from British R&B/Soul legend Terri Walker, and fast-rising vocalist Sincerely Wilson, who has previously worked with Bastille, JP Cooper, and Wretch 32, to mention a few.

From the EP’s positively defiant opener ‘Leave Me Be’ and the infectious drums-led ‘Runaway’, to the resounding R&B/Pop offering ‘Things You Do’, to the slow-burning piano ballad ‘Situationship’, and the EP’s experimental R&B curtain closer ‘Swimming’, Cherri V’s Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 1 EP is underpinned by her exquisite vocal performance, honest and relatable lyrics and excellent musicality, and is arguably one of the best British R&B or Soul records of 2018 so far.

Speaking about what to expect from her EP, Cherri V says, “This EP has been shaped over the course of 18 months, and I’ve been very free to express myself, working alongside producers that gave me the room to do that. My aim is to always create music that is uniquely ‘Cherri V’, and tell my own stories. I’m inspired by my own personal experiences – the good, painful and indifferent – as well as pressing social issues, but whatever my truth is in that moment, is what you’re going to get”.

Expanding on why the record is called ‘Brown Eyed Soul’, Cherri V explains that, “I called the record ‘Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 1’ to put a spin on the term ‘blue eyed soul’. I don’t think Black artists get enough credit for creating this genre of music, which comes the most natural to us – whether you want to call it urban, R&B or Soul. The title of the EP is important to me because I wanted to highlight the importance of black artists being credited for the beauty of ‘Brown Eyed Soul’”.

The South London native adds that “We all too often see other artists propped up and celebrated for pushing urban, R&B and Soul music forward, but the artists that have grown, lived & breathed this sound from an early stage still get overlooked. ‘Blue Eyed Soul’ is regularly elevated over all else, and I wanted to put a spin on that, to make sure our own ‘Brown Eyed’ soul comes to the forefront and continues to be celebrated”.
