Urban Vault Interviews – Sean Elliot

Urban Vault caught up with Louisiana artist/producer Sean Elliot to ask him about his latest release BIG BOY, and more…

Baton Rouge, Louisiana artist/producer Sean Elliot presents ‘Big Boy’, his new single featuring fellow Mississippi rapper and Big K.R.I.T. collaborator Big Sant. Produced by Joe On The Track, the track will appear on Sean’s forthcoming album ‘Brown Liquor & 808’s’ which will also feature Adam Dollar$, DQ Rodgers and Iraouree.

Sean released his ‘Preface‘ EP in 2017 which spawned visuals for ‘Cool‘ and ‘Like Fresh‘.

“I feel this record embodies the 808s, the basslines, and the sound in general that I was fortunate to grow up on in the 1990s,” Sean says. “Unapologetically Southern”.

What are the benefits and challenges of holding down that classic southern sound in the rap landscape of 2018?

The benefits would definitely have to be the positive reception from other lovers of that era. If you were around during the golden age of southern rap/country rap tunes then you will definitely gravitate to the sound and the vibe of my music. Challenges would have to be the exact opposite of that meaning appealing to the younger generation who either were really young at that time or not born at all yet.

What song of yours do you recommend people listen to first and why?

“Cool” from my Project Preface. It’s is a slower track that’s perfect for a chill night time ride. It’s what I feel is an accurate portrayal of who I am as not only an artist but a person. Like the hook says, “This ish cool my n****, just like me / I’m Sean E, I made the beat”. That’s me in a nutshell; take it or leave it I’m still gonna be cool no matter the circumstance.

What’s your process for writing songs?

It depends really. If I’m writing to a track that I already have, I usually start with the concept then the chorus. Once I get the concept down the hook is usually the easiest second step. Now on the other hand if I’m making a brand new beat, sometimes I’ll think of bars and hooks for a song before I even finish making the beat so I usually jot down ideas so I don’t forget anything and run down the list once I’m done and go with what feel would be the better record.

What have been some of the reactions to ‘Big Boy’?

All positive! Everyone seems to love the authentic vibe to it. I feel like it was right on time for the summer. Shout out to every DJ that played it in the club (@uzumakiflyboy at @dancersmensclub), on the radio (@moose_harris of Urban Flosarus Radio 88.3FM) and at events ( Mike-T [@solelab_br] of Sole Lab Radio 96.9 WHYR). It’s also had several write-ups online from 1stdayfresh, thaantidote, popolitickin, digiindie, spitfirehiphop, illuminati2g and of course Urban Vault and much more! It’s been a good 3 weeks since the release.

What motivated to name your forthcoming album ‘Brown Liquor & 808’s’?

That just goes back to everyday life. When it’s Friday afternoon, it’s time to hook up with my boys to get our weekend kicked off. What’s the two essential things necessary to start us off? Most likely some 808-filled music and some kind of brown liquor… preferably Henny.

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
