South East London emcee Kid Bookie recently dropped his latest EP SHAKE UP, a sonic collection of his current mindstate
Kid Bookie is a largely untapped fountain of musical mastery from the UK. With the exception of just a few key figures that have spent time discovering his unique rap talent, charm and unapologetic truths, there remains a lot that is still to unearth about his potential. The release of his brand new EP is set to be the catalyst for his discovery as Kid Bookie grabs listeners by the balls and gets ready to give things a ‘Shake Up’.
Both sensational and whimsical, ‘Shake Up’ delivers a sonic collection of Bookie’s current mindstate, something that is evident through all of his music. His quick wit and real talk could be mistaken as being offensive at first glance, however when you peel back the layers, you realise the depth within his lyricism, and its this refreshingly confident truthfulness that has earned him some spectacular support so far, particularly from the U.S Hip Hop fraternity.
From the intro, Bookie paints the picture. Talking with emotion and frustration in an ode that is made up of melodies and ad-libs, the tongue-in-cheek delivery is of instant interest. Warming to his pain through the melodies, the ad-libs then create a lighter tone that throws you into the quandary of whether he’s actually being serious at all or whether his way of dealing with his pain is through his wit.
In contrast, ‘Shake Up’ is the EP title track and there’s no question as to why. An offensively, likeable track, Bookie describes the music game and tackles realities that aren’t often dared to be questioned. His unapologetic disarming of rappers and how they need to wake up and start making real music is very straight to the point but Bookie has a unique way of giving subjects a dressing down in a manner that has you agreeing with all that he is saying.
‘Drowning’ takes the tone down to a mellow vibe track which ends the EP, depicting a man drowning in sorrow talking about vice’s that can’t be controlled, which a lot of people will relate to.
Kid Bookie says of the EP,
“Whether it be challenging my own masculinity in how I vent about my relationships, why I’m a hopeless romantic and only feel comfortable displaying it in sonic form, enjoying my tongue and cheek, offensive nature or that I’m addicted to life’s vices that keep a control over us all, some sort of self-inflicted release, I covered it in here. Enjoy it, go and fuck to it, make a child or something. Create art”.
Having won serious Hip Hop supporters and comrades from the likes of DJ Semtex, D12’s Kuniva and ex Slaughterhouse’s Crooked, Kid Bookie has a firm foundation within the scene and has many ears on his unique, real and entertaining music. He crosses boundaries in music that others are afraid to and defies genres, blurring lines constantly which makes his sounds fresh and authentic. ‘Shake Up’ is one of his most bold and real statements to date and should definitely be inhaled as an experience.
