South-London-based rapper Linguistics’ new EP SELF-MEDICATED, inspired by the golden era of UK Hip Hop, shows a more reflective direction, a frank and honest personal insight rarely seen so far

UK artist, emcee and rapper Linguistics has been steadily building a name for himself on stage by combining Hip Hop lyricism and skilful wordplay with the sheer energy of bass music – now his trademark flows are captured in a new EP ‘Self-Medicated’. Starting out as an emcee in Bristol in 2010, Linguistics became heavily involved with the D&B scene, with his career taking a huge leap in 2012 when he began working with legendary DJ and producer, Friction. The duo would go on to perform at some of the most prestigious festivals around the world including Glastonbury, Global Gathering and Pukkelpop.

Inspired by the golden era of UK Hip Hop – the likes of Jehst, Taskforce and Braintax, Linguistics was also writing and recording his own independently-released Hip Hop, as well as lending his bars to D&B tracks by Spor, Icicle, Fourward and Joe Ford amongst others, receiving support from BBC R1 and 1Xtra.

Now the South-London-based rapper’s new EP ‘Self-Medicated‘- shows a more reflective direction, a frank and honest personal insight rarely seen so far. Co-produced with childhood friend Charlie P (Jorja Smith, Maverick Sabre) amongst others, the record documents the rapper’s struggle with depression and anxiety.

“Writing was my therapy”,

he states about a project that attempts to tackle the stigma around mental health.

“Although it might be uncomfortable for some, it’s so necessary for myself and others to talk about these things”.

With ‘Self-Medicated’ out via In Orbit, the young rapper is sure to continue to generate serious interest and his Hip Hop direction balancing conscious lyricism and innovative instrumentals, you’ll be hearing a lot more of Linguistics in 2018.
