Urban Vault caught up with South East London born, Sydney, Australia based R&B singer Danielle Bellas to ask her some questions about her new single I GOT THIS, & more…
‘I Got This’ is the inspiring new R&B single by Danielle Bellas. The young UK singer/songwriter says,
“ ‘I Got This’ is about turning negative thoughts into positives ones. There’s so much negativity in the world right now and it’s easy to get caught up in it. Music has always been a healer for me, so I’m hoping this song can remind people that there’s always something beautiful to focus on, something to be grateful for and a different way of looking at things, including ourselves”.
The track is released after Mental Health Month and the music video features people opening up about their own negative thoughts and fears – showing that no-one needs to be alone in their pain.
‘I Got This‘ is the third single from Danielle Bellas, co-written and produced by successful production duo Jud Mahoney and Natalie DeLucia (Michael Jackson, Brandy, Britney Spears). The single stays true to the artist’s unique twist of mid 90’s R&B, which fans and media know her for.
Her previous singles Take A Minute and Starship were supported by Urban Vault UK, Pointless Thoughts, 1883 Magazine, LittleGayBlog, Vents, New Wave District and Fortitude and made it to #13 in the Music Week Urban charts.
What is your name?
Danielle Bellas
Where are you from?
I was born in South East London, but I now live in Sydney, Australia.
How long have you been making music?
I recorded my first single when I was 16 years old and have been writing and recording off and on since then.
How many songs albums have you released to date?
I’ve released 3 singles – ‘Starship’, ‘Take a Minute’ and ‘I Got This’, plus 3 remixes so far.
Can you tell us about your new Track ‘I Got This’, the background, and the inspirations behind it?
‘I Got This’ is my 3rd single, and it follows the previous two with that late 90s/early 00s pop/r&b feel. It came about because I’d been experimenting with positive affirmations and loved the idea of creating a song based around them, that makes someone feel empowered and uplifted when they listen to it.. So essentially the song promotes self-belief and using the affirmation “I Got This” to overcome negative emotions.
How have you ended up in the music industry?
My journey started when my cousin introduced me to his friend who was a local music manager and he took me into a studio where I co-wrote and recorded my first single at the age of 16. That gave me a taste for it and started the ball rolling. I joined a girl group when I was 18, stayed in that for 2 years whilst I was at University, then kept writing and recording whilst working a 9-5 until I decided to prioritise my music and really back myself, and now here I am, with my 3rd single out!
What did you think of the music industry in 2018?
It’s a completely different beast compared to when I was in the girl group, in the early 00’s, that’s for sure! It’s great that the internet has opened up the industry, and streaming services alongside online distribution means it’s never been easier to release music, but it also means the market is heavily saturated so it can be hard to stand out. I love that we have the freedom to be creative and put our art out there without the need for major labels, but it also sucks that a lot of the time you can be judged on how many followers and views you have, rather than the actual music you’re putting out there.
What have you got planned for the rest of 2018/2019?
The video for I Got This will be coming out soon which I am SUPER excited about. 2019 will see the release of my debut album and after that, anything can happen!
What inspires you when you make your music?
It can be anything from an experience I’ve been through, something a friend has told me, a book I’ve read, or just a feeling that the track gives me.
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
I’d love to work with some of my earlier inspirations, like Babyface, Teddy Riley and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Collaborating with Bruno Mars would also be epic!
What’s your favourite track at the moment?
Ariana Grande – thank u, next.
What do you do when you’re not making music?
Chill with friends at the beach, exercise, meditate, watch Netflix, scroll Instagram!
In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do?
I love how you champion new and unsigned urban talent alongside established artists, giving us a platform to share our music. I appreciate your support so much!
Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
