North Carolina based emcee Ron Beatty recently dropped the visual to his latest track BROWN LIQUOR, featuring Wade Soul, taken off his latest album NIGHTS LIKE THIS
Ron Beatty is taking his own route, off the beaten path but he’s never far from the familiar. He’s always growing but firmly planted in his upbringing. With his forthcoming project, ‘Nights Like This’, the North Carolina rapper proves that there’s more than one way to ‘turn up’ while finding your place in rap, and it doesn’t have to feel like anyone else’s. It should feel like home.
“You know when an artist finds their ‘sound’?” Beatty asks, then answers his own query. “Well, this is my ‘sound.’ It sounds more like me than anything I’ve ever created”.
It was a painstaking process but he was committed. The rapper worked on Nights over the course of a year, implementing his love of Hip Hop and the naturally soul-filled intonations of those born and raised in the South. For instance, his latest single ‘Brown Liquor’ is an ode to progression despite the occasional misstep. The honeyed chorus coupled with bars rooted in reality makes for an instant favorite.
Beatty raps: “Had me skipping payments / Almost got my shit repo-ed / See I remember nights, when I was sleeping on the floor / Niggas done made it in the house ain’t no more peeking in windows…”.
“This album is the soundtrack to the rides I used to take back home”, Beatty explains. “I made it specifically for home, an area in North Carolina called Down East. The long rides in the country and backwoods of nothingness, far from a break or an opportunity”.
Songs like ‘The Most’ and ‘Tito Jackson (Background)’ play into the same sort of vibe, honest lyrics, over production made for big body whips with premium sound systems.
“It’s real orchestrated production”, Beatty enthuses. “I’ll put this album against anybody shit and hold my own!”.
‘Nights Like This’ is a 12-track project, full of clever one-liners and sticky sweet melodies, running just under 45 minutes and guaranteed to make listeners feel something.
The stakes are high. At the end of ‘The Most’, we hear a conversation between Beatty and a friend:
“I’m ‘bout to make it happen. It’s time…”, he said, trailing off. “Because you know, on the other side, it’s getting up and going to work every day. That’s what lies on the other side of just saying: ‘Fuck this shit…”.
“I’ve been through every point of life imaginable while creating this album”, Beatty shares. “From extreme highs to extreme lows. But I never lost focus of what got me to this point, my home and the people who I really do this for. And of course, my damn self to be honest. I can’t pour from an empty cup so I need mine first”.
