Urban Vault caught up with Athens, Georgia based recording artist Caulfield to ask him some questions about his recent GOD IS DEAD EP and more…
The Southeastern United States is legendary for cultivating rising Hip Hop stars. Following this trend, independent Hip Hop artist Caulfield out of Athens, GA pushes the confines of modern Hip Hop with his fresh, forward-thinking, edgy music. With a nonchalant attitude, Caulfield’s impactful lyrics represent the more introspective side of urban music.
Covering compelling topics from his divorce to his religious beliefs, his standout presence has gained him die-hard fans nationwide. Performing alongside renowned Hip Hop acts such as Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony, Lil Xan, Ugly God, Waka Flocka Flame, and Pastor Troy, Caulfield delivers a compelling live performance.
Caulfield’s ‘God Is Dead’ EP is a sinuous journey into the five stages of grief as he parallels the loss of faith and love. Tackling denial on the melodic ‘Blue Pills‘ and a bout of depression on ‘Not Okay’, the five-track composition is a compelling and relevant piece exposing society to startling, present-day realities.
What is your name?
Curtis Jones aka Caulfield
Where are you from?
I was a military brat so I lived in several different places but Athens, Ga is my home.
How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music for over 10 years
How many songs/albums have you released to date?
I’ve released 5 projects but only 2 under the name Caulfield, Under the Influence and God is Dead.
Can you tell us about your recent ‘God Is Dead’ EP, its background, and inspirations behind it?
I was in a long term relationship that ended abruptly. Around, the same time I began to lose faith in my religion as well. I found myself in a really dark place and my only way out was making this project. I wanted to create something that embodied the entire experience of grief so each song I wrote was a representation of each of the stages.
How have you ended up in the music industry?
I started entering freestyle battles in Atlanta and enjoyed some success. I decided to take things a little more serious and moved to Athens, Ga to be a part of their legendary music scene.
What do you think of the music industry in 2019?
It’s as crazy as it ever was but as an independent artist, it’s a great time to thrive with all of the resources available. I’ve been fortunate enough to carve out my own piece of real estate by building a fanbase through social media.
What have you got planned for the rest of 2019?
I’m going on tour in June and headlining a new festival in Atlanta called Crunch Fest in October.
What inspires you when you make your music?
Life.
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
I’d love to work with Rico Nasty. I love her energy and personality!
What’s your favorite track at the moment?
I’ve been listening to Nevermind a lot lately… Breed is always on repeat.
What do you do when your not making music?
Making videos or finding some outlet for creativity. I recently made a pretty dope video for ‘Stigmata’ with the help of some really cool here in Athens: Jacob Kinsman, David Nix, and Dan Aguar who worked with Athens legends R.E.M.
Which do you prefer, Facebook or Twitter or Instagram?
Definitely IG
In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do?
I love what you guys are doing. I think you represent the culture well.
Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
