The Vault UK caught up with South-East London based emcee/singer/producer Jim Legxacy to ask him some questions about his debut project DYNASTY PROGRAM: A METRICAL COMPOSITION INSPIRED BY THE NIGHTS SPENT AS THE RAIIDER EP, & more…
Introducing exciting new UK alternative rapper, singer, producer and composer Jim Legxacy with his resounding genre-bending debut project titled ‘Dynasty Program’. Led by punchy hard-hitting lyricism about his life, family, community and world view, over a captivating musical backdrop that fuses UK rap, R&B, alternative rock, and Hip Hop, to great effect, Dynasty Program, is undoubtedly one of the best UK debut projects of the year. Written and produced by Jim Legxacy, who comes highly recommended if you like Slowthai, Octavian, Dave, Lancey Faux, or Skepta, the ‘Dynasty Program’ EP, which is short for ‘Dynasty Program: A Metrical Composition Inspired By The Nights Spent As The RAIIDER’, is
“Something I hope people find some form of comfort in”,
according to Legxacy.
What is your name?
My name is Jim Legxacy, but my mates call me James.
Where are you from?
I am from south east London, born in Lewisham, and grew up within the borough but my ethnic origin is Nigerian
How old are you?
I turned 20 last June
How long have you been making music?
I started making music in 2017, which feels like ages ago now but usually people think I’ve been making music for ages, in 2017 was when I decided I wanted to make music because I started to become passionate about my favourite artists at the time & thought I could rap as well, I started off really bad but I’d send a voice note of me rapping to my boys every week and they’d critique my technique, delivery, beat selection, etc, after a few months I was rapping like it was second nature!
How many songs/albums have you released to date?
I have 2 official singles out on Spotify but at the time of this being out I’ll have a whole EP out with 7 tracks (Including the 2 singles I released prior)
Can you tell us about your latest EP and the background, and inspirations behind it?
This EP was started in 2017, when I made the beat for WYSMIMH but at the time I didn’t know I was going to be an EP, so technically I started creating it in October 2018, the idea was to convey the feelings, emotions, and timeframes I have felt in my life in the most expressive way possible, whether that be implementing different genres I love such as Alternative Rock, Hip Hop, Indie pop, indie rock etc, or using interesting new structures, I wanted to be as open & vulnerable as possible.
The area I grew up in, I think there is a lot of turmoil. As kids and young people we witness a lot of things we shouldn’t see whether that be deportations, prison sentencing, or stabbings that potentially lead to the untimely deaths of people extremely close to us, we see our parents just about get by, despite working multiple jobs because they still have to provide for a family from where their from.
This all occurs when you’re young & then all of sudden you wake up 18 or 19, with this immense pressure of having to change everything because you’re amongst the first in a generation of people who’s parents migrated here to enable you to have the resources to live a better life.
Leaving people in a state of trauma that never gets expressed, as you’re also dealing with things education, your own financial issues, etc. Pressure like this leads to attempts to obtain some form of escapism that can be found in a bottle, substances, or love.
I wanted this project to convey this duality, and how I’ve dealt with it, the kind of upbringing I described earlier often is never expressed as the places this usually occurs (where I grew up) people aren’t really allowed to be vulnerable, I wanted to be as vulnerable as possible & create something that people can seek comfort in.
How have you ended up in the music industry?
It was a very gradual battle between passion and doubt but I’m here now making the stuff I want to!
What do you think of the music industry in 2019?
I feel like the music industry is extremely over antagonised! Like I just feel like all the people I’ve met from the suits to the artists are all extremely cool dudes! At least the ones I’ve encountered! As long as your polite people will reciprocate the energy I feel.
What have you got planned for the rest of 2019 and going into 2020?
Nothing the rest of 2019, I want the listeners to really digest this project until next year where I got some special singles lining up as we speak!
What inspires you when you make your music?
Life events, conflictions, dualities, emotions & SAD N*GGA HOURS!
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Either Bon Iver or Frank Ocean! Love them 2 soo much honestly!
What’s your favorite track at the moment?
Frank Ocean – NIGHTS that’s my favourite song ever made if I’m being dead serious, like honestly, I could talk about it all day, but a song that I’ve been bumping recently is Flyleaf – Circle, it’s a masterpiece.
What do you do when your not making music?
Living my life! I like to live my life and experience settings, I think a lot of my music, well all of it pretty much is about my life, if I’m not out there living and experiencing I’ll have nothing to write about.
Which do you prefer, Facebook or Twitter or Instagram?
TWITTER PLEASE! It just feels WAY more real-time and authentic, I also prefer the public interactions on there!
In a few words sum up your thoughts about The Vault UK and what we’re trying to do?
I think The Vault UK is a platform that prioritizes the art and gives an opportunity for all different types of artists to reach a wider audience of passionate music lovers! The role The Vault plays is a role that is extremely important to creatives like me.
Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
