Urban Vault caught up with Vienna, Austria-based Hip Hop crew MC Shnek, DJ Crum & Whizz Vienna aka UNISON to ask them some questions about their latest release REMEMBER WHEN & more…
The Vienna, Austria-based Hip Hop crew UNISON have released a bunch of dope records like the ‘Soundnetworks’ EP & ‘Re:actions’ in the early 2000s which spread across record shops around the world.
The trio consisting of MC Shnek (half British, half Austrian microphone fiend), the legendary producer Whizz Vienna and the turntable wizard DJ Crum have reunited after fifteen years and strike back with their brand new track ‘Remember When’.
Unison brings back the nostalgic feeling of the Golden Era of Hip Hop. Shnek raps about his memories of the good old days as the boom-bap beat takes you back to the ’90s. DJ Crum’s unique cuts add the extra bit of spice!
What’s the name of your crew and where are you from?
UNISON – from Vienna, Austria.
Can you tell us about the Hip Hop scene in Vienna and Austria in general?
There are also a lot of talented musicians and crews who are consistently releasing good music such as Brenk and the DuzzdownSan camp.
How long have you been making music?
All three of us since the late ’90s.
Who are the members of Unison?
DJ Crum (scratches, beats), Whizz Vienna (beats), MC Shnek (vocals).
How many projects have you released?
We released two EP’s (Rea:ctions and Sound Networks) and a 7 inch (Let Me Roll) in the early 2000s.
These albums were released around 2005/2006. Was there a split?
There wasn’t ever really an intention to split. I guess we all had other priorities. DJ Crum focused on his Djing, Shnek on his DnB productions together with Concept and Whizz Vienna produced one of Vienna’s greatest albums so far together with Kamp.
What was the reason to reunite for a comeback?
DJ Crum sent me a beat and I wrote some lyrics for fun never intending on recording anything. Crum then motivated me to get back in the studio. Whizz found the track dope..that’s how we reunited again after roughly 15 years.
When you compare the Hip Hop scene from back in the early 2000s to what it is now, what is the difference and how did the scene evolve for the better or worse?
I’d have to say for the worse. Back then it was more about the culture and the community. Nowadays that aspect seems to have gone missing.
Recently you released the video/single ‘Remember When’. Are there any plans for an album or EP?
We’re working on an album. Our plans are to release it sometime next year.
Shnek, the emcee of your crew, is half British. Which part of the UK is he from and how ended he up in Austria?
I was born in Vienna. My dad comes from a small town near Bournemouth in Dorset so we spent all of our summers in the UK. Due to family issues, I moved to a town called Bridport when I was 15. I returned back to Vienna at the age of 18 and have been living here ever since.
What and who inspires you when making music?
Life in general! Spending time with my family, the beauty of nature, and all different kinds of music.
Your plans for 2022?
It would be great to finish the album in 2022.
Your favorite track at the moment?
Verbz and Mr Slipz – Changed.
What do you do when you don´t make music?
When I’m not at work I spend time with the family. The occasional skateboarding session.
