Southeast London emcee Kwengface recently dropped the visual to his track FREEDOM via COLORS, ahead of his forthcoming album THE MEMOIR
Kwengface drops his mask and reveals his identity after more than five years behind the bally. The momentous occasion was premiered on the prestigious COLORS platform alongside his new fittingly titled single, ‘Freedom’, taken off ‘The Memoir’, dropping 28th April. ‘Freedom’ sees Kweng finesse his flow over an unexpected Garage-inspired production courtesy of CZR, with him stating how he’d risk his freedom to stand up for those closest to him. Although 2023 has gotten off to a wet and gloomy start for most, Kweng has been on a roll since the jump-dropping stand-out singles ‘Ben 10’ and ‘For One’ featuring SL in the lead-up to his project.
‘The Memoir’ comes at the perfect time and is the antidote to the over-saturated Drill scene boasting features from Giggs, Knucks, Reekz MB, Karma, D Skeng, Sha Simone, Lancey Foux, SL, S SLoud, Boj, D Skeng, Trizzac, Snoop, Karma, P.S, D Squeezo, Young Fume and production credits from; Carnshill, JME, Nyge, CZR, Bill, Chris Rich, Quincy Tell Em, Finn Wigan, Chek Beatz, x10, MG, Razz, Knucks, and AJ Sounds. Putting a face to the name is a transformative move from the Peckham native, allowing his fans to continue connecting, supporting, and getting to know more about the UK’s most exciting rapper.
Born and raised in South London, Kweng has been rapping and writing lyrics as early as 12. He came up in the scene as a member of Drill Collective ZONE 2 and was renowned for his distinctive high-energy flows, uncompromising bars, and witty punchlines. Kweng became a household name following the release of ‘3 Stripes’ in 2018, still considered one of the most highly regarded tracks in UK Drill. His reputation continued to spread following the release of the contentious single ‘No Censor’, which ended up being removed by YouTube, initiating cancelled shows and an injunction, forcing Kweng to question his future within the music. Time passed, Kweng evolved, and 2021 became a breakthrough year for him following his debut mixtape ‘YPB: Tha Come Up’ and his legendary ‘Plugged In’ session, which went viral, accumulating over 13M views and counting. 2022 was another standout year for Kweng, with notable highlights including his acclaimed 12-track mixtape ‘YPB: The Archive’, performing at Size Sessions Festival, and collaborating with Knucks on his triple Daily Duppy. He has collaborated with Dizzee Rascal, Knucks, Digga D, and Backroad Gee throughout his career and continued proving himself as a multidimensional artist.
With the paisley flag running through their veins, Kweng sent shockwaves through the scene earlier this month with his most recent single ‘Water’ feat Peckham OG, Giggs. The pair recreated Gigg’s legendary ‘Talking The Hardest’ video shot in the same places in the South over ten years prior, another momentous moment for Kweng. The momentum and support Kwengface has created this year is unlike anything he’s experienced till now, with co-signs rolling in from the likes of COLORS, Wonderland, Complex, and continued champions such as Target.
With his identity revealed, Kwengface’s anonymity chapter ends, and a new one begins. He is more committed than ever to put in the work, despite any challenges put in his way.
