Minneapolis-based musician and instrumentalist MMYYKK drops his new track THE MIDST OF THINGS, ahead of his forthcoming album

MMYYKK (pronounced ‘Mike’), is announcing his highly anticipated sophomore album, ‘The Midst Of Things’, due to be released independently on 28th July, an album that is forward-thinking and experimental as well as possessing his characteristic soul and groove. The album follows MMYYKK’s acclaimed EP ‘Science’ which came out in 2021 on Rhythm Section Records.

The album announcement comes alongside the release of the album’s lead single of the same name. With shades of Cosmic Funk and intricate, glitchy rhythms and distorted harmonies, the sonic alchemist MMYYKK effortlessly blends Jazz, Neo-Soul, R&B, and Electronic to create a track that is complex and eclectic, understatedly catchy and poignant. The single was written against the backdrop of the pandemic and the disturbing events that unfolded in Minneapolis in 2020 and delves into the intricate dynamics of the Black experience in America.

MMYYKK shares his thoughts on the single, stating, “The Midst of Things is a song about coping. It examines the complexities of living in a black body and navigating the stresses and trauma that come with it. The feeling of constant scrutiny. Having to “code switch” in order to get a job, or not be stereotyped. “I didn’t need your love… but I’m gonna need your love.. when I didn’t need your love..” I wrote this song during the peak of the pandemic. Minneapolis was literally burning. After the murder of George Floyd the city was demanding meaningful change. Dollars and donations were pouring in and corporate virtue signaling was at its peak. This song examines white guilt and the propensity to throw money around rather than dismantle systems of oppression. “Soak my soul in “simple green”… a simile for your sympathy..” This song gave me space to move through some of my pain and vent my frustrations. I hope it can do the same for you. The Midst of Things”.

MMYYKK has garnered a dedicated following and continues to make waves in the industry, embarking on musical explorations centered on themes of love, humanity, healing, and higher consciousness. He is also 1/4th of the psychedelic funk collective Astralblak and 1/4th of the Space Jazz collective The BlackBeat Theory. ‘The Midst of Things’ marks the beginning of an exciting chapter, immerse yourself in MMYYKK’s extraordinary musical journey.

Mychal ‘MMYYKK’ Fisher began his creative artistic journey as a child, learning to play whatever instruments he could get his hands on; playing drums in the church, and eventually producing beats for friends and family. He has since become a multi-instrumentalist developing his technique in piano, bass guitar, percussion, and alto saxophone. MMYYKK’s musical journey continued after he decided to take a leap of faith and move to Minneapolis to attend The Institute of Production and Recording, obtaining his degree in Audio Engineering in 2012. Since graduating, he has gone on to produce and engineer music for a plethora of artists locally and nationally.

In 2015, MMYYKK discovered he had a passion for synthesizing sounds and sound design after purchasing his first analog synthesizer. His music has since been defined by his creative use of analog synthesis. It was through this discovery that MMYYKK found his passion for sound healing, and continues developing his use of sound and music as a therapeutic practice for himself and his community.
