International emcee with deep roots from New Orleans and Los Angeles, Voice Monet presents the self-directed music video for ‘Dope (That Real)’. She’s both behind the boards on production for the promo remix and performs live in the video while preparing a tropical cocktail at Nola restaurant Carmo.
Voice uses the platform of bartender to expose some of America’s skeletons in the closet and why it’s framework needs a serious review. Produced by Ze11a of Flight School (student of Mannie Fresh), the original version of ‘Dope’ appears on her forthcoming EP ‘Black Maria‘, dropping September 26th.
Voice has seen over 300,000 records sold between her solo releases and her collaborations with BBE, Ninja Tune, French artist Wax Tailor, Canada’s Public Transit Recordings and UK’s Twisted Funk Records. Her sophomore effort N.O.L.A. Darling spurned the single, ‘NOLA Redux’ featuring Malkovich which topped Gilles Peterson’s BBC World Wide Best Hip Hop of 2009 list.
She was teaching classfuls of New Orleans youth how to rap as an official Teaching Artist In Residence when Hope & Sorrow, the 2007 Decon/Atmospheriques release from celebrated French producer Wax Tailor, went certified silver. She regularly books her own international tours, and has played at world-reknowned venues like L’Olympia in Paris and 2013’s Montreal Jazz Festival.
Former child actor and daughter of New Orleans character actor Lance Nichols (Fantastic 4, Treme, House Of Cards), she’s a Visual Arts graduate of the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and earned her BFA in Media Arts from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
She has produced/directed several short docs about cultural and community empowerment within New Orleans with spotlights on positive role models, burgeoning artists, and organizations. Voice’s last full-length was 2012’s Voice presents Cutz (iTunes).
