Urban Vault Interviews – Ross Jack

Urban Vault caught up with Johannesburg, South Afica based producer/emcee ROSS JACK, to ask him some questions about his music, collaborations and inspirations

Born in Johannesburg, Ross Jack made a name for himself in his home country as a prodigious beat-maker for up & coming Hip Hop acts, soon progressing to full producer credits for big names in South Africa including Toya Delazy, HHP, Chiano Sky & Khuli Chana. In 2012 Ross released his first single titled ‘Seven45’ and officially launched his career  in front of the mic with his own unique brand of Hip Hop.

How long have you been making music?

I have been making music for 11 years, I started making beats for local artists when I was 18.

Can you tell us about your new song, ‘Fall’. What is the background and inspirations behind it?

Well at the time of recording Fall I had just gone through a pretty hectic break up so I was in the space to make my first Love song which I don’t usually do. I suppose the process was the inspiration, I made the song with Pete Boxsta and just the chords he was playing in the studio put me in the zone.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

Actually I wanted to be a footballer, but when I realized I wasn’t good enough I was looking for something else to get into, and a friend of a friend gave me fruity loops and really that’s where it started.

What do you think of the music industry in 2016?

I think it’s in a pretty good space, seems like we slowly conquering piracy with all the digital platforms available now, also feel like there’s a lot of good music out there at the moment too so good ..

What have you got planned for 2017?

Hopefully going to go on tour and take the music to the people, otherwise hopefully just keep doing more music through 2017.

What inspires you when you make your music?

For me it’s all about the beat, that’s what inspires me to visualize the scene that I’m trying to set. After beat then we go lyrics.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your Career?

Many artists from Africa, on this album we worked with Arrow Benjamin and a super talented lady called Lula Beggs, random fact before he was huge I did a song produced by DJ snake.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Probably first on the list at the moment would be Chance the Rapper I love what he does, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Fka Twigs.

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

I’m really feeling Starboy by the Weeknd.

What do you do when your not making music?

I love golf! So I try play as often as possible.

In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do?

Connecting people all over the world with great new music!

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music….
