Urban Vault caught up with London, UK based emcee TAYFUN to ask him some questions about his music and inspirations
Growing up in a family that was well known for crime, Tayfun slipped in to a number of situations that made him question which path to choose. Biding his time, he made the decision to travel Europe where Tayfun found salvation in music and subsequently acknowledged it as his true destiny. As well as the pride in his Turkish heritage, Tayfun is inspired to share his story and struggle with other young people, particularly the Turkish youth he feels will relate to him, and inspire them to fulfill their own destinies.
Where are you from?
Ethnically Turkish, Born and Raised in London
How old are you?
20
How long have you been making music?
Just over a year now
Can you tell us about your new song, the background and inspirations behind it?
Figo, my debut single, is mainly about my background growing up in London, growing up within my family and witnessing what I did growing up. I tried to capture my inner thoughts and reflect my experiences onto the lyrics and the saz (turkish guitar). The inspiration behind it was mainly my father, his ways of living and how that brushed onto me throughout a faze in my own life.
How have you ended up in the music industry?
Through Patrick Osei who was the only individual to pick up on, as he called, a “unique life story” and support me to transcend it into music.
What do you think of the music industry in 2017?
I think the current Music Industry is very much alive. It’s amazing. Stormzy killing it with an absolute smashing album, Nines releasing ‘One foot in’. The UK scene is awesome. Globally I think Music is getting together for the first time. US scene getting involved in the UK scene heavily just goes to show the current UK standards have leaped so high thanks to great music made by our current roster.
What have you got planned for 2017?
To make a statement in the Urban Scene as an established Turkish British Rapper and prove to my people theres so much more to do in the city we live in than to accept the fates given to us by, what I feel, a corrupt system.
What inspires you when you make your music?
Everyday. What I see what I do what I experience on a daily basis has strong enough plots to write and record a song about. Thats how I feel. Music follows me everywhere I go. Theres no specific inspiration behind it… everything on the globe inspires me to do Music.
What’s your favourite track at the moment?
Blem – Drake (More Life)
