Urban Vault Interviews – Godz Chyld

Urban Vault caught up with The Bronx, New York-based emcee Godz Chyld to ask him about his latest release the WOKE EP, with Jordan River Banks and more…

The Bronx, New York artist G.C., a.k.a. Godz Chyld presents the music video for ‘Heavens Pt. 2 (Look Around)’, the lead single from ‘Woke‘. This is his new EP produced by longtime collaborator, Amsterdam, Netherlands-based Jordan River Banks. Banks previously produced Chyld’s track, ‘Blue Flame‘, featuring Killah Priest and Loaded Lux.

GC describes the new single as,

“A sequel to a song me and Jordan had on our first project, ‘Forever’. On that song, I was saying I’m gonna take you to the heavens. On this one, I’m taking you there. I’m expressing that I feel Heaven is a state of being and a state of mind, and the imagery of my lyrics is what’s gonna take you there if you can follow me”.

GC and Banks have two other collaborative projects between them: ‘Reborn‘ and ‘Forever,’ and GC released the ‘Things Ain’t What They Seem‘ EP in 2017.

“‘Woke’ is where I feel we all need to be right now,” GC says of the new project. “A lot of people are going around saying they’re woke, and I think it’s become more of a trend than a real thing. So I just wanted to bring something real back to Hip Hop and give people something to feel, and also my perspective on some of the issues going on right now”.

You and Jordan River Banks have worked extensively together. What do you think is the key to the chemistry and working relationship?

I think our styles just go together. We’re into similar things and a similar style of music so it just fits and blends together. I love the style of beats he has and it brings a diff vibe out of me and makes me wanna y’all about deeper topics and say something real. It really brings out my best work. I feel like every project we’ve dropped together is classic and this newest one is the best work.

How did you guys approach your new work together differently than in the past? How do you feel about the results?

For one, we met up and did this project together. The past projects we sent work to each other over the internet because he’s out in Amsterdam and I’m in New York, but this one he was actually in New York and we met up and recorded these tracks in maybe 2 days. It was a dope experience and better for the music since we were able to bounce ideas off each other on the spot right there. It made for a fun recording experience. To think we did most of these songs in 2 days is crazy too because I feel like this is the most focused sound so far so it actually helped at the end of the day and worked towards making a great project.

You’re attempting to redefine the term Woke with this project. What have been some reactions to that?

I’m coming from the original definition of it so anyone who’s really Woke just gets it and anyone who’s just going with the trend of it won’t get it unless it’s a trend. That’s what those kinda people do.

How do you feel about the year in music so far?

I think it’s been aight. It hasn’t been amazing or horrible, just kinda whatever which is almost as bad as bad. I don’t think a lot of these artists who are becoming famous are real artists – they’re social media personalities and all these other things that are marketable so it makes sense for labels to want them but it hurts the art at the end of the day. The music and the special quality an artist has is still an important thing to me. You have to be special and a lot of these dudes just ain’t.

What are your thoughts on the current administration? Do you see anything positive coming out of this?

I think this is how it’s meant to be right now. This is all God’s plan whether it goes good or bad. I don’t care who’s president because God is my president. My name is Godz Chyld – I’m not worried about the things the average person is worried about and Trump is a joke to me. The only thing I’ll say is that whether it’s this administration or the next or the one after that, minorities in this country will be forced to wake up to the fact that this country does not care about us so care about yourself and fight for what you want, or stay sleep. But on this side we gettin woke.

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
