Urban Vault caught up with North London R&B/Soul singer, Phebe Edwards to ask her about her new release GET IT RIGHT featuring Mark Asari and more…
‘Get It Right’ is the new single from North London soul singer, Phebe Edwards, currently on tour with Years & Years. The single was produced by one of the UK’s most talented producers, Luke ‘GKid’ Grant, and features The Voice star Mark Asari.
What is your name?
Phebe Edwards
Where are you from?
I am a singer-songwriter from North London, England
How long have you been making music?
I have been making music for well over 15 years. But I released my first official single ‘Say Suttn’ in 2014.
How many songs/albums have you released to date?
There are various songs that have been released that I’ve featured on. But officially since 2014, I have released 7 singles.
Can you tell us about your new song, the background, and the inspirations behind it?
‘Get It Right’ is greatly inspired by a collection of 90’s RnB music it takes you back to the TLC, Aaliyah, Eternal, SWV days! Those real head bopping shoulder shaking days! Remember those? Lol, The song interprets the yearning for trust to be re-established in a relationship. Can we ‘Get it right’ again after being hurt by each other or even one or the other? Can the relationship be restored to what it genuinely was after heartbreak?
How have you ended up in the music industry?
I was born and raised singing in ‘the gospel choir’ and in my late teens, over time I got into session singing at weddings, birthdays and various corporate events, which progressed into touring. I was doing this alongside having a fulltime job. In 2008 I left my job to become a professional backing singer. This led me to sing for artists worldwide. To name a few; Liam Gallagher, Stormzy, James Brown, Adele, Jessie J, Donna Summer and Rita Ora and I am currently on tour with Years and Years. This is mainly how I got into singing in the industry as a whole.
What did you think of the music industry in 2018?
The industry has changed a lot since I was younger. There is a lot more space for independent artists like myself to show themselves, release their music and make a name for themselves.
There is so much freedom now in being a creative compared to 10, 15, 20 years ago and I’m here for it!
What have you got planned for the rest of 2018/2019?
As Christmas is fast approaching, so for the rest of what’s left of 2018, I will be winding down and looking forward to my festive break. 2019 I am planning my own headline show! Can’t wait!
What inspires you when you make your music?
Life! Real life experiences. I’m grateful for the things I go/have been through as it makes my music process easier. I’m able to release or express both positive and negative situations through my music and singing and if feels good.
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Id love to collaborate with Fantasia Burrino. She is a massive influence I love the passion in her delivery when she performs. It’s a real dream of mine.
What’s your favourite track at the moment?
To be honest I can’t say I have a specific track that is my favourite right now. I’ve been streaming the ‘Colours’ playlist on Spotify for a few weeks now and I’m really enjoying the variety there.
What do you do when your not making music?
If I’m not drinking a cup of ‘Yorkshire tea’ you will find me either spending time with my 2month old God-daughter Nevaeh or visiting friends and family. The festive season is coming and I’m on a little break from tour. Family and my few close friends are important to me.
In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault UK and what we’re trying to do?
I love that Urban Vault UK has created a platform for us, independent artists, to be seen, and heard and supported! Thank you for all that you do. It’s appreciated.
Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music.
