Urban Vault caught up with Berlin, Germany based European production team Snowgoons to ask them some question about their latest album SNOWGOONS INFANTRY, their 20-year career and more…
Snowgoons are Hip Hop producers based in Germany. The Goons consists of DJ Illegal, Det Gunner, Sicknature & J.S. Kuster. Throughout the years, the buzz surrounding the Snowgoons has steadily escalated as their gritty, authentic and eclectic beats have gained recognition in both the US as well as within the burgeoning European Hip Hop scene.
You released the ‘Snowgoons Infantry’ album on March 29th. How has the feedback been so far?
Yes, its super dope. Headz seems to enjoy the album. We already got over 300K streams on Spotify and the Videos receiving very good feedback as well. We will drop some more Videos and we looking forward to the Vinyl release in May now.
Most of your previous albums had a certain topic. What‘s the concept behind ‘Snowgoons Infantry’?
We are constantly in war. With ourselves, the government, at the job and so on. In our case, we are in a war with the industry so we build our own army of dope emcees. We dropping beat bombs all over the scene. Also, it is important to support the new wave the young or fresh generation of Hip Hop so we start working with a lot of new cats like Crimeapple, Rigz, ANKHLEJOHN, Rome Streetz, K-Prez, Jay Royale, Flee Lord, Eto just to name a few.
2019 is the 20th anniversary of the Snowgoons. I heard rumors you will release some huge projects this year with ONYX, Das EFX, Planet Asia and Bahamadia. What‘s the word on that?
We working on a lot of music right now. Some of the ones you mentioned is done and we even working on more projects but for now, we got the new ONYX project coming next. We will have some big announcements coming soon.
In the meantime, you released another album with the Viro The Virus ‘From Jersey To Germany’ Snowgoons Remixes.
Yes, seven years now since Viro left us with all his music. In honor of Viro The Virus‘ annually Remix series, we put all our collabo songs and remixes together for the ‘From Jersey To Germany‘ album. The proceeds on this project will go 100% to Viro’s family!
You were signed to Babygrande in the early years of your career. After deciding to go separate ways you started your own label Goon Musick. With the online shop goonsgear.com it seems like you have plans going 100% independently, selling merch, CDs, vinyl, digital downloads and bundles directly to your fans over the internet. What`s the idea behind
that?100% Independent that means we doing everything ourselves. Like for real. We don’t even use a distributor anymore. Every unit that gets sold is 100% us. You can check on our physical releases there is the barcode on the back which supposed to be an official code but we put up our own GoonsGear code one that so we can’t sell it to bigger outlets anymore. They require the official barcode in order to get your product in the distribution. But we are like ‘Fuck That’. At this point, we want to thank everybody for supporting the Goon MuSick Movement.
How did the music biz change over your career? What are your thoughts on music streaming, social media? Which is the most important medium/platform for your music nowadays?
It really changed a lot and I’m talking even about the 90s when I wasn’t in the business like that. I can understand that kids nowadays only stream and don’t want to spend money on music like that. I mean I had to spend at least 100-200 bucks a month to get new music and most of the times I spend way more cause I wanted all the new records. For now, I think Spotify and Instagram are the best ways to promote your music and stay up to date with the latest. But also Facebook and especially Youtube are a must.
Any shows or a tour in the making?
This May we will tour all over Europe and we are still booking so make sure you check out the dates on our social media, we are constantly posting. And we got plans for all America meaning south and north as well.
Where do you see the Snowgoons in 20 years?
Thats easy to say, we will be continuing to do dope music. It’s not really relevant if our type of music is still popular or not we will just do our thang. Our slogan ‘We Keep Hip Hop Alive’ is true to the game. I think good music is timeless so yes I know I will still do music in 20 years.
In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do?
Websites and online magazines/blogs like Urban Vault UK are important because there are not many underground media sites that cover music like we make. It’s like the radio they mainly play the same bullshit 5 songs over and over again. But if you dig deeper you will find some dope Radio shows and stations. So don’t only take your info from Facebook or Twitter, there are good online magazines/blogs like Urban Vault UK out there!
Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
