Otira summons the ghost of rave’s past with his new EP, ‘Soundboy Burnin’, resurrecting the sounds of UK Hardcore, Breakbeat, and Jungle through a modern lens. The treasure pot of sounds ranges from classic acid to nostalgia-inducing breakbeats, as the mysterious producer ushers in a thought-provoking new wave of after-hours sounds. This collection arrives following the release of the EP’s namesake single, ‘Soundboy Burnin’, as well as Otira’s official remix of The Bloody Beetroots’ seminal track ‘Warp 1.9‘, featuring Steve Aoki), earlier this year. Otira opened his 2019 with a massive collaboration with Dog Blood. After spending a few days in the studio with Skrillex and Boys Noize in Berlin, the track ‘KOKOE‘ was created thrusting Otira onto the scene.

Soundboy Burnin’ is a four-track EP that calls back to the early days of the rave, from Jungle, Happy Hardcore, Gabber, Techno, and Breakbeat. The title track sees the EP open with manic snares and dark breakbeats, summoning an intoxicating, bass-fueled production. ‘XTC’ enthralls listeners with organic percussion colliding with digitized synths, creating the perfect atmosphere for the hardstyle-reminiscent bass that finds its way into the tune. ‘Gunshots’ innovatively makes use of gunshot samples layered atop aggressive snares and cymbals, highlighting Otira’s undeniable skills as a producer. Closing with ‘Dread’, Otira infects listeners with wild, fast-paced 808s and rhythmic bass. Soundboy Burnin’ is yet another compilation of tunes deserving of the support that respected peers like Virtual Self, Skrillex, Boys Noize, and The Bloody Beetroots have given Otira on his previous releases.

With influences from a diverse cast of dance music genres, Otira’s latest is a thoughtfully curated and unforgettable piece of work. ‘Soundboy Burnin’ is out now via Dim Mak. This follows Otira’s ‘ADE’ debut at Dim Mak’s ADE 2019 event at De Balie.
