Los Angeles-based producer/DJ/dancer PENNYWILD unites global dance and music cultures on her Dim Mak, New Noise debut FOOTSTEPS
An infectious bassline pops underneath lush chords and commanding chants, providing a sizzling soundscape for ballroom voguers worldwide. The genre-bending track arrives primarily as a result of PENNYWILD’s time in Ephrat Asherie’s street and social dance company in New York back in 2014. During this time, Omari Wiles, who contributes vocals to ‘Footsteps’, helped open her eyes to the ball and vogue culture. Five years later, the two are bringing the best out of each other again with a dynamic collaboration fit for ballrooms and nightclubs alike.
“The moment I discovered I wanted to create an homage to the genre, I knew I had to get Omari involved. Through working on this track together, we really pushed the boundaries of one another’s artistic expression” – PENNYWILD.
PENNYWILD is a DJ, producer and choreographer currently based in Los Angeles by way of New York City. Growing up in theatre and dance, the multitalented performer got her start touring the world with the Broadway musical ‘West Side Story’ at 18. During the tour’s three-month stay in Berlin, she began to participate in the city’s vibrant electronic music scene, and she subsequently pivoted to DJing.
Since then, PENNYWILD has solidified a reputation for her intricate performances, incorporating music, visual art, and original choreography into a cohesive live experience. As PENNYWILD, she’s performed at globally renowned festivals such as Coachella, SXSW, Lightning In A Bottle, HARD Summer, BUKU, and more. In 2018, Penny teamed up with finger drumming expert Coby Ashpis to create a MIDI controller powered by your feet, the ‘Penny Pad’, in a larger initiative to fuse choreography with music production. To this day, she digitally releases original dance concept videos under the series #PennyWildWednesdays.
New Noise is Dim Mak’s new music discovery imprint that focuses on cutting-edge sounds from burgeoning artists across the genre spectrum. Launched in 2010, New Noise got its start as a compilation series highlighting fresh faces handpicked by Steve Aoki and crew. By 2015, the platform evolved into a bi-weekly, free-download model based on singles. New Noise’s current incarnation is a copyright-free model that allows the budding community of Twitch gamer’s and amateur YouTube content creators to use New Noise music in their videos and live streams sans purchase or fees, all in exchange for linking back to the artists and their music.
