Essex born, London based recording artist Mercy’s Cartel drops the visual for her new single FALLING via Polarface Music
Inspired by a socially distanced romance that blossomed during the lockdown earlier this year, ‘Falling‘ was born amidst pain and grief. With elements of R&B, Pop & Electronica tinged throughout, the song is filled with her warm vocals, percussion-driven synths, and a dreamy melody.
Growing up in Essex, Mercy found herself relating more to the ‘Geezers’ as opposed to the ultra-glam ladies of Brentwood. Experiencing racism from an early age she couldn’t wait to leave the town she grew up in but still holds a place for it in her heart. First introduced to music as young as eight years old, she started playing the double bass in her local church and orchestra. Her Dad’s love for his record collection and DJ-ing meant there was endless encouragement but she crippled with self-doubt and tried everything to enter the corporate world. Becoming a doctor and lawyer were both in her sights and it wasn’t until she found herself interning at an investment bank when she released that life wasn’t for her. Later, Mercy found herself at Bristol uni studying philosophy when she randomly posted on the uni forum searching for an aspiring producer who wanted to collaborate, an immediate response from Dom Porter, and the rest is history. Mercy dropped out of uni, took up a songwriting degree at BIM, and finally found herself doing music full time.
Feeling her most natural self on stage, Mercy has supported artists such as Kojey Radical, Etta Bond, Yazmin Lacey, and more. In 2018, she released her first single and EP, ‘Vibes Cartel’, which gained the attention of Jamz Supernova at BBC Radio 1Xtra and was voted in her Top 5 EPs for the month. Last year Mercy headed out on a 4-date UK tour, performing in Birmingham, Manchester, London, and Bristol. In addition, she performed at established festivals such as Dot to Dot, Glastonbury (via Silver Hayes), Kendal Calling, and Giles Peterson’s We Out Here festival.
Last month, she was part of Native Management’s initiative to get more women of colour into music careers both front and back of house. Speaking extremely highly of her time there, Mercy learned skills in lighting, mixing, playback technology and now feels more inspired than ever. Experiencing a full circle moment during the course whilst speaking to one of her biggest inspirations Nao, Mercy now has her sights set sky-high. With new singles on the way and an EPs in the pipeline, she is excited to get her music out there.
