West Africa based emerging superstar/record artist Ayra Starr unveils the visual to the track SARE, taken off her debut self-titled EP
Produced by Mavin Records head honcho Don Jazzy, ‘Sare’ is an anthemic, brassy and stadium-ready number blending contemporary Afro-pop with traditional Nigerian folk music interpolating the Lijadu Sisters 1979 classic ‘Orere Elejigbo’.
The accompanying video directed by Lekan (Tiwa Savage, Ladipoe, Johnny Drille, Crayon), who previously helmed Ayra’s ‘DITR’, has curated a visual experience that is all at once a narrative piece, a presentation of forward-thinking fashion and a towering offering of Ayra’s skills as a multi-faceted entertainer.
The visual re-imagines the track’s themes of young love, intimacy, and infatuation through an afro-futurist lens neatly referencing innovative output like Janelle Monae’s ‘Dirty Computer’, Beyoncé’s ‘Black Is King’ and Missy Elliott’s ‘Throw It Back’.
Speaking on ‘Sare’, Ayra said, “The song celebrates love, the idea of going after what you want and following your heart. I enjoyed making the video. It makes me happy to see what we were able to put together, hope it makes you happy too!”.
The arrival of the new video comes after Ayra’s first-ever performance showcase, where she was able to meet and greet her rapidly growing legion of fans for the first time.
In the months since Ayra’s debut in January as Mavin Records’ newest signing, she has racked up over 18 million global streams with her debut EP ‘Ayra Starr’. The project was led by the empowering anthem ‘Away’, which has amassed over 3 million views to date.
Ayra’s magnetic blend of Afro-pop, R&B, trap, and alté styles has attracted global critical acclaim from NME, CLASH, Record of The Day, The Face, The Native Magazine, OkayAfrica, Schön! Magazine, The Line Of Best Fit, HYPEBAE, and more.
The incredible buzz coming out of Lagos from her launch saw Ayra Starr shoot to No.1 on Apple Music Nigeria’s Song, Album, and Video charts, followed by playlist support for ‘Away’ on Apple Music’s ‘Africa Rising’, Spotify’s ‘African Heat’ and ‘Phenomenal Woman’, BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Africa 360 and Manny Norte’s show on Capital XTRA.
After posting a series of covers on Instagram, Ayra was discovered by acclaimed record executive/producer Don Jazzy and was subsequently signed to Mavin Records. Having spearheaded the careers of luminaries Wande Coal, D’Banj, Tiwa Savage, and Rema, Don Jazzy and Mavin Records have their eyes set on building Ayra to be West Africa’s first female global teen superstar.
