Urban Vault Interviews – Plastic The Funky Mulatto

Urban Vault caught up with Heidelberg, Germany-based emcee/producer/DJ Plastic The Funky Mulatto to ask him some questions about his latest album P=MC2 & more…

P=MC2‘ is the first solo LP but 11th project from Plastic_tfm a.k.a. Plastic The Funky Mulatto. The Album features Nottz, Marco Polo, Stu Bangas, Nolan The Ninja, The Artifacts, A.G. from D.I.T.C., Kyo Itachi, and other very talented frequent collaborators.

From front to back, this album tells a story. HIStory!! With witty rhymes, crazy flows, tight production, respectable features, dope cuts from DJs, and unmatched energy. This album makes any Hip Hop heart beat higher.

Every artist uses art to express their feelings and experiences in life. It isn’t any different for Plastic. His writings and Raps are his therapy. He describes how much he grew through life and processed his emotions through his art.

What is your name?

Peace. My Name is Thomas a.k.a Plastic.

Where are you from?

Currently, I am living in Heidelberg Germany by the way of New Jersey.

How long have you been making music?

I started rapping in 93/94, at first just for fun spitting in cyphers in High School but I started taking the emcee craft seriously in 2015. I started making my own beats in ’98 and have been spinning the wheels of steel since 2002.

How many songs/albums have you released to date?

My newest project, ‘P=MC2’ which is my first solo project, is my eleventh project. I have released or have been featured on other projects as either an emcee, a producer, a DJ, or all of the above.

Can you tell us about your new first solo album P=MC2 , the background, and the inspirations behind it?

Initially I was going to produce the whole album myself and have no features on it but then I said to myself,

“You know what. I gotta step my game up and make this the best album I possibly can. Treat it as if this was my very last album.”

I am a fan first so it was only natural to hit up artists who are some of my personal favorites. So I started getting in touch with artists I always wanted to work with. Especially artists from the U.S., since I have previously only worked with heads out of Germany. With nothing to loose I went and recruited! Most artists I hit up are on the album. There are still a bunch of dream features I would love to work with so I’m FAR from done! I also featured artists I have previously worked with and wanted to give them some shine, as the features started coming in I knew this was going to be something special! I’m all about paying respect and giving people their chance to get noticed and get more exposure. I think the album is a good mix of known and dope up and coming artists. Even though I have been doing this for years I still consider myself up and coming and this album hopefully is a bridge to the next stage!

‘P=MC2’ is for me, for my fam, for my inner circle, for anybody that appreciates music from the heart and the first chapter from my ode to HIP HOP!

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?

I have worked with Nottz, Stu Bangas, Marco Polo, J Clyde, Kyo Itachi, The Artifacts, Nolan The Ninja, A.G. from D.I.T.C., John Sarastro, Monteneer The Menace, The Outta Space Crew, and a few more very talented artists.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

I would love to work with Skyzoo, Edo G., The Four Owls, Masta Ace, M.I. from the Constant Deviants, anyone from the Wu-Tang Clan, Benny, Oh No, The Alchemist, The Snowgoons, and of course Premo! There are plenty more artists I would love to collab with though! Lots of talent out there!

What inspires you when you make your music?

My daughter inspires and motivates me, even if she does not know it! Also, people who are authentic, stay in their own lane and grind until the wheels fall off! Anyone who walks the walk. Actions speak louder than words!

How have you ended up in the music industry?

I would not say I am in the music industry. I really just want my props and collaborate with people who have an equal mindset, who are motivated and just want to create some dope-ass music and keep pushing the culture and themselves forward!

What do you think of the music industry in 2021?

I think with social media and all the other tools that have been made available to us, it’s a lot tougher to REALLY make some noise. There is just a flood of artists from all walks of life out there creating content and doing their thing. For a while, I felt that the appreciation for physical copies, or whole projects versus songs, were not there for a while. I do have the feeling that people are starting to appreciate whole projects again. I could be wrong though too. I’m from an era where we listened to albums from front to back, all day every day, for WEEKS in a row!

What have you got planned for the rest of 2021?

Currently, I am working on a solo album completely produced by Kyo Itachi. Also, I am working on a secret project with some heavy heavy hitters on there! Still got my producer album on the back burner and a few other projects I would love to put some life into. Stay tuned.

What’s your favorite track at the moment?

As tough as that question is, I would have to say that my favorite Hip Hop track ever is ‘Protect Ya Neck’ by the Wu-Tang Clan. In my opinion, it’s the dopest Rap track ever recorded! The energy, that damn beat, the Kung Fu elements, and the new and unheard styles, rhymes, and flows just get me every time until this day and many days to come!

What do you do when you are not making music?

Hang with the family and my closes circle. I keep that circle tight! I read a lot and make sure my mind is on point soaking up knowledge. Every now and then I pick up the gaming controller or just slouch on the couch watching some good old Netflix.

Which do you prefer, Facebook or Twitter, or Instagram?

Right now I’m mostly on the Gram. But can we PLEASE revive myspace?! Myspace was the jawn for real, for real! All about the music and no shenanigans… I miss that place…haha…!

In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do?

I love any platform that wants to give some shine to artists that really do it for the culture. Known or unknown! I got nothing but love and respect for that! Mega props!….peace….plastic…

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
