New Zealand based Salmonella Dub releases their track RETURN TO OUR KŌWHAI – VIDEO MIX, featuring Whirimako Black, on major platforms today

Salmonella Dub are finally releasing their ‘Return to our Kōwhai – Video Mix’ featuring Whirimako Black, Cut from the title track of the album, this third single from ‘Return to our Kōwhai’ was mixed by Tiki Taane & Andrew Penman. The epic video was shot by Mark Russsel, on a road trip from Christchurch to Kaikoura & Whakatu in August 2021.

The lyrics,

“Some will come to look for gold”,

and the motifs in the video, reflect on urban drift and the lost connection with nature we all face when living in cities. The ‘Whakapapa of our environment’ spoken word was adapted from the speech Albert Holfman gave to 500 people on his 100th birthday.

The line,

“Coming alive tonight in the city”,

was penned by a close friend of Salmonella Dub’s, Aaron Tokana, who happened to drop into the studio as the band was writing. ‘Whakapapa of our environment’ is dedicated in spirit to Albert & Aaron.

The ‘Return to our Kōwhai – Video Mix‘ release had been blocked for the most part of their year, forcing the band to reschedule their next two vinyl releases and 22-track digital album! Following a climax week, where the band’s 187 tunes back catalogue was unexpectedly removed from all digital stores worldwide, Salmonella Dub has no intention of being defeated, and are now using this to springboard their latest release to success!

Aotearoa’s Salmonella Dub was formed in 1992 by Andrew Penman (guitar), Mark Tyler (bass), and Dave Deakins (drums). By 1994, they had released their 18-track debut album and 7-track ‘Dubtomfoolery EP’ and had begun touring Australia! In 1995, the band began their first foray into live jungle, releasing their ‘THC Winter’ EP mixed by David Harrow. The band brought David back from the UK to work on their next album, ‘Calming of the Drunken Monkey’. In 1998, they released their first cross-over single ‘For the Love it’, and their subsequent albums ‘Killervision’, ‘Inside the Dubplates’, ‘Outside the Dubpates’, ‘One Drop East’ all went multi-platinum. In 2007, Tiki Taane left the band to start a solo career and the band released their platinum-selling album ‘Heal Me’. In 2008, they toured with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and released the live album ‘Feel the Seasons Change’. In 2009, they released the ‘Freak Local’ EP and ‘Freak Controller’.

Since then, Salmonella Dub have celebrated an incredible 20 years in music by releasing the ‘Same Home Town’ 12″ EP! Followed by the ‘Commercial Grates’ double album for their 25th birthday and a 10 x 12″ vinyl Deluxe Boxset plus recent singles, ‘Searching for the Sun’, ‘World she Waits’ & ‘Soul Love Trippa’.

A band the whole world will shout about, listen closely to Salmonella Dub!
