Urban Vault Interviews - Acizm

Urban Vault Interviews – Acizm

Urban Vault caught up with Brisbane, Australia-based  Hip Hop artist Acizm to ask him some questions about his latest release KILLAMAN & more…

Acizm addresses hard-hitting topics with a flow and a writing style that is both technical and intellectually stimulating. His raw talent is exceptional. Genius wordplay, impeccable literary techniques, and natural ability to both rapidly and skillfully rap make Acizm the unmatched artist he is today.

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Acizm and I’m based in Brisbane Australia.

How old are you?

42 years young!

How long have you been making music?

I have been making music on and off for the last 15 years, but I only started to take it seriously as a career around 2018.

How many songs/albums have you released to date?

I have released three albums plus an EP and numerous singles. So, over 100 songs in total spanning the last 15 years.

Can you tell us about your latest track ‘KILLAMAN’, the background, and the inspirations behind it?

My new song ‘KILLAMAN’ is the prequel to a track and video clip I dropped last October called ‘MEDICATED’ where I have been arrested and institutionalised, ‘KILLAMAN’ captures the descent into madness that leads to ‘MEDICATED’ We are also now working on the clip for the final instalment of a trilogy which will be dropping in early 2023.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

I grew up listening to Hip Hop and freestyling then in my late teens I started writing and recording as a creative outlet for some of the things I was going through. It became my therapy, and the therapeutic aspect is still a big reason why I make music today. I never thought at the start that I would take it seriously and make a career of it but here we are 15 years later and I am being produced by and working with some of the dopest artists engineers and producers in the game as well as being able to meet and collaborate with some of my childhood music idols such as B-Real from the legendary Cypress Hill as well as building a worldwide network of connections with talented local and international artists and creatives.

What do you think of the music industry?

When you are making art of any form it is always going to be subjective and that’s how I feel about the music industry. I don’t listen to much ‘Mainstream’ music, but I do recognise talent where it’s due regardless of how I feel about it. – I’m far more interested in the independent music scene. I think it’s more genuine and organic as indie artists get to make the music they want to hear whereas ‘Mainstream’ music is driven primarily by what’s popular and what sells.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2022?

I have one more single to drop before the year is done, and we are already recording new tracks for projects planned for next year.

What inspires you when you make your music?

That’s a good question. I have an almost subconscious desire to write songs so it’s a kind of obsession, but it helps me organise my thoughts, so I think it’s a good thing. If I didn’t have a way to release all the crazy shit, I have inside my head I would probably go insane, so I guess it’s partly in my nature and partly a need I feel I have to satisfy.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?

I love the collaborative aspect of making music so I have already worked with a lot of different people but some of the bigger names would be B_real (USA), Chino XL (USA), Slaine (USA), Evil Ebenezer (CAN), Apathy (USA) Prada West (CAN), Ren Thomas (USA), Megaladon (AUS), St bedlam (AUS), K-otic1 (AUS) Angel Nieves (UK).

I have a playlist on my Spotify called Acizm Collabs where you can check out more of the features and artists I have worked with.

On the production side I have worked regularly with C-Lance (USA) for the last couple of years as well as, The Arcitype (USA), Insideus (AUS), Starkore (CAN), Chronic Sythe (CAN).

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Technine, Ill Bill, Crooked Eye, Hopson …. I mean there are so many amazing and talented rappers I wanna work with that list is huge haha. A few I am actively planning to collaborate with in 2023 are Chris Webby, Rittz, Snak the Ripper and Merkules among others.

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

I always struggle to pick a ‘favourite song’, there is so much talent and so much variety these days too and different songs fulfil different needs for me but a couple of songs I am really loving right now are Chris Webby – Elephant, Tom MacDonald – Sheeple and Vinnie Paz – Faith Healer.

What do you do when you’re not making music?

If I’m not working on my own releases, I am either recording and mixing other artists from my home studio, shooting and editing music videos and content which has recently become a new passion of mine and spending as much time as I can with family and friends.

Which do you prefer, Facebook or Twitter, or Instagram?

I prefer Instagram; however, I also have a Facebook, and Twitter and recently started posting on Tik Tok.

In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do.

Giving underground artists from all over the world the chance to be discovered is such an important opportunity and I respect and appreciate what you guys are doing. Finding legitimate companies to work with is one of the hardest parts of marketing yourself as an indie artist and it’s great to see you guys are there to provide real support in the sea of false promises that is the internet.

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
