Urban Vault caught up with Cleveland, Ohio-based rising Hip Hop artist Josh Maison to ask him about his latest track MR. MAISON & more…

After a string of mixtapes, a departure from college, and a name change, Josh has made it his mission to be taken seriously in the music industry as an Alternative Hip Hop artist. It’s from 2019 that fans can find his material developing into the promising act he is today.

What is your name and where are you from?

Yooo!! I’m Josh Maison and I’m from Cleveland Ohio!

How old are you?

I just turned 24!

How long have you been making music?

I’ve been making music for about 11 years now!

How many songs/albums have you released to date?

During my early years as a musician, I released many mixtapes and ‘loosies’ on Soundcloud under the name Jxsh leading to my first album ‘Loverboy’ in 2018. After that album, I officially changed my name to Josh Maison in 2019. Since then I’ve released 10 singles, 1 album, and 2 EP’s!

Can you tell us about your latest track, the background, and the inspirations behind it?

My producer Ana Kennedy sent me an early version of the beat when I was visiting LA and I remember I immediately recorded a voice memo of what would become the hook of the song! We’d been listening to a lot of early Kanye stuff and Westside Gunn around the time we made the song!

How have you ended up in the music industry?

I’ve only ever wanted to be two things, a musician and a superhero. I’m glad I’m able to be at least one of em!

What do you think of the music industry?

I’ve been fucked over a few times but that just comes with the territory I suppose.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2023?

Working on some really exciting stuff! I and Ana Kennedy are going to Los Angeles in November to make something really special… But more on that soon!

What inspires you when you make your music?

I try to take in everything around me. From conversations to the comics I read and the shows I watch, I’m always getting new ideas from everywhere!

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?

I’ve collaborated with many people! Collaboration is one of the most important factors in my music. I’m always trying to work with new people. I work with my producer Ana Kennedy on all of my songs! Connor Barkhouse masters all my music and Blake Bohls does most of my art!

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

I’ve been working with a lot of guitarists recently! As well as a few other producers to work with Ana and I.

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

This new Slauson Malone 1 song New Joy is sooooo good.

What do you do when you’e not making music?

Playing video games mostly.
