Urban Vault Interviews – Side Effect

Urban Vault Interviews – Side Effect

Urban Vault caught up with Austin, Texas-based Terrence Wood aka Side Effect to ask him some questions about his brand new collab with DJ Illegal of the Snowgoons MUSICA DE LOS MUERTOS, and more…

Goon Musick recently announced the release of a new solo project from DJ Illegal (Snowgoons) featuring Side Effect aka Terrence Wood (Austin, Texas) which dropped today! (November 02nd). ‘Musica De Los Muertos’ is a dark and twisted story, reminiscent of the early Snowgoons sound.

What is your name?

My name is Side Effect, but lately, I’ve been switching to using my real name Terrence Wood. Over the years, a lot of groups and artists have popped up using the name Side Effect. It gets confusing out there.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Philadelphia, PA. But since 2011, I’ve lived in Austin, TX.

How long have you been making music, how many albums have you released so far?

I started writing rhymes in junior high school. I was making basement demo tapes and doing local talent shows in the early 90’s. In 2003, I independently released my first album ‘Underground Concoction’ and started performing a lot more around the Philly underground Hip Hop scene. In 2004, I linked up with my friends Havok and Stress from Krush Unit and released my second album ‘Rocking Chair Theory’. Since then I’ve released several albums and EPs including ‘Dirt Hustlin’, ‘Cabin Fever,’ ‘The Bangologist’, ‘The Side Effect’ EP, ‘Flyest on Papyrus’, and a lot of mixtapes, singles, and features.

Tell us more about your latest release ‘MUSICA DE LOS MUERTOS’ with DJ Illegal from the Snowgoons,
what prompted you guys to work together?

I’ve known DJ Illegal for 10 years now. I met him through my friend’s Stress and Reef who toured with him back in the late 2000’s. So when DJ Illegal approached me about a solo project that he was working on I was more than interested. I’ve always enjoyed working on Snowgoons projects so this was a no-brainer for me.

What’s the concept behind ‘MUSICA DE LOS MUERTOS’?

DJ Illegal let me know that he was looking to do a darker project and use some beats that he always loved but never seemed to fit on previous Snowgoons albums. He had some loose concepts and ideas for me to build off of and I basically filled in the blanks with where the music took me. It was an interesting challenge for me to also write from a darker place and touch on more grimey topics, so I feel it improved me as a writer to be able to do that.

‘Musica De Los Muertos’ will NOT be available on iTunes, Spotify etc. The album is limited to 300 CD’s and digital downloads only, via bandcamp and GoonGear.

What‘s the idea behind that?

It’s about exclusivity and creating something unique for the people. The 300 CD’s and the signed bottles of virgin blood are strictly for the most dedicated fans who love to have a physical product in their hands. I know the Goons are also building up their online presence, so goonsgear.com is the hub to get everything Snowgoons related and affiliated.

What inspires you when you make your music?

What inspires me is the idea that I’m creating a piece of art in the form of a song that may have an impact on people long after I’m gone. I think that’s a cool thing to leave behind, and selfishly, it’s a way I can live forever.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

I think it happened pretty naturally. My father was a DJ in the 70’s, so there was always music and music equipment around our house growing up. When Hip Hop came around, I
instantly gravitated towards it. I liked breakdancing as a kid but was never really good at it. I started writing rhymes around 13 years old and with time started to get better. Once technology changed and allowed artists to do it themselves, that opened the doors for me. The internet allowed me to meet and collaborate with talented people such as DJ Illegal whom I probably never would have met otherwise.

What do you think of the music industry in 2018?

I’m loving it! There have been so many solid albums that have dropped in the past year. I like how artists are also stepping up the frequency of their projects sometimes dropping two albums in a year. There’s plenty of dope albums out there to listen to right now.

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

‘Boblo Boat’ by Royce da 5’9”…I like the video, it’s a cool coming of age story that I don’t ever seem to get tired of.

What do you do when your not making music?

I’m a family man so I spend the majority of my time with the fam. I also work on a couple side businesses I have.

In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do?

I think Urban Vault is dope because you can find music from all over the world from new artists to veterans. Thanks for your support and always reppin’ the real!

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music….

The album is limited to 300 CD’s and digital downloads only, via bandcamp and GoonGear.
