Urban Vault Interviews - SUPA KAIJU

Urban Vault Interviews – SUPA KAIJU

Urban Vault caught up with Copenhagen emcee/producer Sicknature & Brooklyn emcee Napoleon Da Legend aka SUPA KAIJU, to ask them some question about their latest release FALLING DOWN, and more…

SUPA KAIJU is a Rap/Hip Hop duo consisting of Brooklyn emcee Napoleon Da Legend and Copenhagen emcee/Producer Sicknature (also known from the production quartet Snowgoons). The new single ‘Falling Down‘ featuring Netousha is a melodic Hip Hop song produced by Sicknature and mixed & mastered by Napoleon Da Legend. The video was directed and filmed by GCutMedia, Kristiansen Films and Jise One of The Arsonists.

How did the collab come about, what prompted you guys to work together?

Napoleon Da Legend: I actually came out to see a Snowgoons show in Queens at Blackthorn 51. I didn’t really know what to expect and who they were individually. It’s the first time I got to see Sicknature rock the mic and he was demolishing it. I didn’t attempt to meet them that night. I later realized Sicknature was also doing a lot if not more of their production and I was floored. So I reached out and when he came back out to New York, we had a sit-down and decided we could work on music together. At first, it was just about him sending me some beats and it evolved in us doing songs together because we were knocking them out the ballpark with little effort. I think Sicknature came out with the idea that we should make music as a group instead of individual artists. Seeing his skill-level and work- ethic, I was open to the idea. And then, boom… Supa Kaiju is born.

Sicknature: I found out about Napoleon online by coincidence. When I did, I was very surprised that I never heard about him before. He is an emcee with an undeniable pen game and he can rap on any type of beat and still sound ill. So when we started talking about working on music together I knew it was gonna be dope. Napoleon and I have a lot of the same taste in music, cartoons, and life in general, so coming up with song ideas seemed natural. Plus, our workflow is on point.

What does the name Supa Kaiju stand for?

Napoleon Da Legend: Kaijus are monster in Japanese movies and anime. Usually, they pop up, wreck havoc and destroy everything in their path with unhinged power. We are the ‘elite’ Kaiju, the ones the established heroes can’t handle. We are coming out of the left field and destabilizing the establishment and shaking the status quo. In a nutshell, we represent the anti-heroes in the comic book or anime.

Sicknature being from Copenhagen/Denmark, Napoleon Da Legend from Brooklyn/New York how is your work process on such a far distance?

Napoleon Da Legend: It’s actually been good. We speak on the phone weekly and bounce ideas off each other. It’s a communication thing at the end of the day. Hopefully one day we will be able to create in a studio setting. Until then, I feel good making music like this, we both know what we have to do when we hear something and rarely have to stray away from our artistic instincts.

Sicknature: I agree. It’s important to communicate regularly when you’re in a group. The internet made that part easy. Everything we do is agreed on by both of us and everything is 100% transparent.

Tell us more about your latest video single ‘Falling Down’ and your upcoming album?

Napoleon Da Legend: ‘Falling Down’ to me is one of those beats where I knew it was special when I heard it. Like some signature Sicknature beat where it’s symphonic and hard hitting at the same time. The song is a reflection of the times, which are particularly tough for the majority of the earth’s populace, whereas the pie is getting bigger but ‘our’ chunk seems to be getting smaller. People are tired of it, we would think that in this age of easy access to information this would improve the overall well-being and quality of life of people. In reality, it’s improving the lives of a very small few and as Supa Kaiju we come in to call it out, destroy in order to rebuild a better framework. We got the talented Netousha to sing the hook, which captures the feel and power of the overall emotion of the song. This is one of those songs where we knew we wanted to shoot a video for.

When can we expect the album?

Sicknature: The album is pretty much done. We will release it this Spring/Early Summer shortly after the release of ‘Falling Down’. As soon as we have a final release date we will make sure to let you know on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.

Napoleon Da Legend: You can expect destructive bars over bone-crushing beats. Also, a lot of introspection and social commentary. The album takes you through different emotional states, we didn’t want to be predictable as far as the beat selection and tempos. It’s an introduction to the Supa Kaiju universe.

Will the album feature guest appearances, can you tell us whom?

Sicknature: We didn’t want to pack this project with featured artists cause we wanted people to get to know Supa Kaiju and how we get down. As Napoleon said, this album will be an introduction to the Supa Kaiju universe and sound, so it was important for us to mainly focus on that. Besides, we were just having fun recording the songs, so we didn’t really think too much about features.

Will we see a physical release or are you going digital only?

Sicknature: We will release it digitally at first and it is possible that we will release it on vinyl later as well.

How has the music business changed over your career, What are your thoughts on music streaming, social media, and decreasing CD sales, which is the most important medium for your music nowadays?

Napoleon Da Legend: I started really being focused when streaming was popping, so I’ve been all-in during this new era. People can get your music more easily and as a fan of music, I appreciate that. True fans will want to get your physicals, so that’s not a concern. I just think like an era, you have to make good music and give it to the people the right way. I’m not too ‘Hocus Pocus’ about the music business. If you can’t convince someone to get behind your movement at a show, you will have a hard time lasting regardless of the hit that’s currently out. I do it because I love it and whatever comes with it is like a cherry on top of the sundae.

Sicknature: I really like the idea that music is available for everyone and easily accessed. I personally like Spotify cause you are able to handle your artist profile yourself. Something that Apple Music and Tidal could learn a lot from in my opinion.

Sicknature, you are also part of the production team The Snowgoons and recently released a new album entitled ‘Snowgoons Infantry’, what can you tell us about the release?

Sicknature: ‘Snowgoons Infantry’ is an album where fans get exactly what they want. A variety of real Hip Hop beats and a lot of dope guest appearances. 21 tracks with verses from PMD, Jamo Gang, Big Noyd, Nine, Shyheim and many others. Supa Kaiju is featured on a track too.

The Snowgoons celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, can we expect more releases coming in 2019? I heard rumors on a DAS EFX album you guys are producing entirely and also a new Onyx project?

Sicknature: To tell you the truth there is so much going on right now that it is hard to keep track of all the projects that I’m working on at the moment. I´m sure that Snowgoons/Goon Musick got more in the pipeline for 2019 – I know that they are about to release a new project with Viro The Virus (R.I.P.) and that a new Onyx album is in the works right now. I did a big part of the production on #Wakedafucup, so I will most likely be involved in producing their new album too.

Any shows or tours in the making?

Sicknature: Some promoters are already reaching out to us. So I’m pretty sure we can expect a Supa Kaiju tour soon. I will be on tour in Europe with Snowgoons in May, so watch out for that.

Is music a full-time job for you? What do you do when you are not making music?

Napoleon Da Legend: Music is a full-time job for me. When I’m not making music I’m usually sleeping.

Sicknature: Full-time.

In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do?

Napoleon Da Legend: I fully support and applaud the Urban Vault platform for shedding light on the artists who move the culture forward.

Sicknature: Shout out to Urban Vault for always supporting independent Hip Hop artists! Salute!

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
