Urban Vault Interviews – Naya Ali

Urban Vault caught up with Montreal, Canada based recording artist Naya Ali to ask her some questions about the latest track/visual GET IT RIGHT, her upcoming album GODSPEED and more…

Ethiopian-born Montreal rapper Naya Ali is excited to unveil the captivating new music video for her latest single titled ‘Get It Right’. ‘Get It Right’ sees Naya Ali collaborating with Parlophone Records signed production duo Banx & Ranx, who are having a breakout year of their own, to deliver an undeniable rap offering that sets Naya apart. Having previously worked with the likes of Dua Lipa, Sean Paul, Jhene Aiko, Yxng Bane, and Lady Leshurr, Banx & Ranx have also sold over 1 million records of their massive hit single ‘Answerphone’, which reached number 5 in the UK singles chart last year.

Speaking about the inspiration for her ‘Get It Right’ video, Naya Ali says,

“The visuals are about breaking free from the ‘sunken place’. I felt like I was trapped for so long in a state of mind that had me forget who I really was, so I had to break free and escape by killing a part of myself that I had outgrown. The dark and symbolic visual is a Kanye-esque canvas, inspired by Stanley Kubrick meets Jordan Peele”.

What is your name?

Naya Ali 🙂

Where are you from?

Born in Ethiopia, Montreal Canada raised.

How old are you?

I’m 31

How long have you been making music?

Music has been part of my life for a long time, since my late teens. I’ve only taken it seriously in the last two years,

How many songs/albums have you released to date?

I’ve released one 6 song EP and ‘Get It Right’ the single off the upcoming album.

Can you tell us about your new album, the background, and inspirations behind it?

‘Godspeed’ is the name of the upcoming album and it’s all about timing. The last couple of years have moved so quickly for me but what most don’t realize is that it took me my whole life to become the woman that can change her life in one year. It’s about waiting for what feels like forever for something so ‘Out Of Reach’ but once you activate something with yourself, things move at lightspeed. The trick is to have the patience to uncover that ‘Factor’ within yourself.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

In 2017 on my birthday I told myself I would change my life in one year. I had this mantra ‘change your mind, change your life’ that I would repeat every day. 6 months later I quit my 9-5 job and a year later I got signed.

What do you think of the music industry in 2019?

I feel like its still in a transformative phase since the long holding traditional models of purchase is what the industry was built on. Streaming is the lead generator for consumption but I feel that we haven’t figured out a calibrated distribution of numbers. Also, we’re still adapting to additional new ways of music consumption like Tik Tok and the symbiotic relationship they have to social content consumption.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2019?

I am putting the finishing touches to the album right now, I have a few upcoming shows, my first international one actually in Belgium next month.

What inspires you when you make your music?

Life, experiences, emotions, my surroundings, what I discovered when I introspect. Sonically, great artists and great songs inspire me to create. Kanye for his avant-garde universes, J Cole for his simple but cutting pen, The Weeknd for the moods he creates, etc.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Kanye

What’s your favorite track at the moment?

Ballin’ – Mustard ft. Roddy Ricch

What do you do when your not making music?

First off handling the business side of it. Second I train and box, spend time with the people I love and scheme on new ways to elevate.

Which do you prefer, Facebook or Twitter or Instagram?

I prefer Instagram, it’s the new business card (that you can’t really lose lol) and it’s just the best way to reach me.

In a few words sum up your thoughts about Urban Vault and what we’re trying to do?

UV UK be the premier international source for the culture including music, interviews, clothing, etc. Very dope thank you for your work 🙂

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music…
