Urban Vault Interviews – Jewale Indigo

Urban Vault caught up with Atlanta, Georgia-based recording artist Jewale Indigo to ask him some questions about his latest release SUPERFLY & more…

Hailing from the thriving auto hub of the Midwest and the musical origin of the Deep South, Jewale Indigo is a multifaceted musician and artist who has been enthralled by the music industry for some years. As a 4th generation artist, he was introduced to music at a very young age. His parents, having been in the music industry themselves, versed him in the indoctrination and passion of gospel music in his early years. After receiving his first guitar on his 14th birthday, Jewale Indigo gained a greater musical ear and playing style from art forms such as Country, Jazz, Blues, Hip Hop, Modern Rock & Roll, Funk, and of course Gospel straight from his proud Southern roots. Jewale Indigo’s father brought him to his first digital studio with the most decked-out gear and taught him the intricacies of studio engineering, sound recording, and producing.

Can you tell us about your latest track, the background, and the inspirations behind it?

My latest track is entitled ‘SuperFly’ It displays my appreciation for Funk music, Rhythm, and Blues, as well as Soul music. I appreciated the well-known actor Ron O’Neal aka Superfly who provided the original basis for what is now known among the Hip Hop culture as having ‘Drip’. He rose above the daily obstacles and setbacks placed before him to supersede and raise above the others. Coming from the inner city of Flint, MI., I likened myself to him.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

Music is just a life goal. It is something that I work and strive for. It is a passion and a natural skill set for me.

What do you think of the music industry in 2023?

I don’t…my focus is not on the industry as a whole but on my individual artistry.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2023?

Music, Music, and more music. Making music, promoting it, and doing shows.

What inspires you when you make your music?

I’m rarely inspired by outside circumstances and influences, though I can be at times. For the most part, my inspiration draws from my inwards. See, there are many professions one can do or obtain just by the thought of wanting to become that. Many take that route and become that thing, whatever it may be. Then, there is a certain group of people who are drawn to certain things just by their natural instincts from within; based on the purpose they were created for. As noted before, I am a fifth-generation songwriter and performer. It’s not based on the fact that I have been around the atmosphere of music and songwriting since my youth; but rather the fact that in my youth, I already possessed a creative mindset to do certain things. My parents also guided me in the direction of my character and gifting. Nothing was introduced via force or influence. I was handed tools and resources for what my parents noticed I was gifted at and meant for; well before I even understood. Unbeknownst to me, I was already rehearsing and mimicking my roots. I was doing what my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. were and had been doing. So as mentioned before, I draw my songwriting and music composition from what I hear within. Whether driving through traffic, working out, etc., it is at these times in my personal life I hear songs and lyrics from my soul. From that point, I generally begin jotting down that information and composing sounds musically that match or fit. Simply put.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?

Street Poet, but I am really particular about my joint ventures.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

That’s a good question. I will have to get back to you on that one.

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

There’s never really a favorite because there is always more work to be done.

What do you do when you’re not making music?

Promoting my music.

Which do you prefer, Facebook or Twitter, or Instagram?

Instagram.
